Episode 13, July 6 So You Think You Can Dance 2, July 6: Naming Names
by Sting7 -- 07/07/2006
It’s getting to be crunch time for the remaining dancers of So You Think You Can Dance! Picking a male and female to go home is even more difficult for the judges, but someone has to go! Heidi has successfully danced out of cousin Benji’s shadow, but is she destined for yet another trip to the bottom three?
Cat Deeley tells us in her ominous, yet ultimately redundant, way that one male and one female will be leaving us tonight. But who?
Before we find out, the 14 remaining dancers cut “Footloose” to a Mary Murphy choreographed routine that is big on spirit. This time, no burying Dmitry in the back – that honor is saved for Musa. Meanwhile, Heidi and Benji are allowed to pair, and are highlighted, as is a flipping Travis. Virtually no Allison at all. Grrr.
That done, Cat turns her attention to the judges. Cat reminds Nigel he was stern last week. Nigel thinks he was somewhat misunderstood – he has no problem with a dancer improvising, but the dancer has to have a clear idea of what they are going to do before changing it. “Pirouetting forever” will not get done (Ben), nor will falling off the stage (Jaymz).
Cat asks Mary if the physical demands are taking a toll on the dancers. Mary says that last year, the dancers got a couple days off, this year not so. Injuries are starting to happen, but they all know that is the life of a dancer. Mary bets we couldn’t tell who has a serious back injury, who has a broken toe, and who blew out a knee. (We do know Donyelle has a broken toe, because Nigel spilled that last show. I’m betting Jessica has the back problem, and Musa blew out the knee. What am I basing that on? Nothing!)
Cat asks Dan if he thinks one partner is holding back the other in any of the pairs. Dan says he does think there are some dancers who are stronger than others, and points out that Natalie definitely lifts up Musa’s shortcomings. I’m sure Musa is enjoying these shots he takes week after week. America likes you, Musa, that’s what matters. He also thinks Jessica let Jaymz down.
Next, a recap of last show’s performances. And on to the results:
Donyelle and Benji – are safe!
Natalie and Musa – are safe!
Martha and Travis – are safe!
Heidi and Ryan – not safe!
Jessica and Jaymz – not safe!
Ashlee and Dmitry – are safe!
Allison and Ivan – not safe!
Whoa! The first shocker of the season! That means Heidi, Ryan, Jessica, Jaymz, Allison, and Ivan.
Mary says she is dumbstruck by the result. Nigel says he is surprised, but understands the result. He says America is not looking at technique like the judges may be and Allison and Ivan did a slow swing. It was good, but not the sort of thing that makes the audience lunge for the phone.
SAVE ALLISON! Oh, and Ivan.
This is making Jessica and Jaymz look mighty vulnerable. Their solos are going to have to be stunning to survive. Especially Jessica’s.
Jessica does a nice bit of jazz dancing to Queen’s “Body Language.” She admits she wasn’t comfortable with the choreography and thinks she may have let Jaymz down. Jaymz gives us a bit of the matador in his paso doble and is very impressive! Cat gives him a WOW the same time I do. Heidi works her fringe dress to death to “Proud Mary.” It’s going to be hard to deny that energy. Heidi says there is something so cool to dance for the audience and America, and it’s the greatest joy.
Ryan displays fantastic technique to “Love” by Musiq Soulchild. He is so quietly talented. Ryan has nothing but compliments for Heidi. He tells the judges that he wants another chance and thank you. Allison gives a lovely interpretive dance to Me Shell N’Degeocello’s “Bitter.” Cat asks how she manages the roller coaster to go from a predicted win to bottom three. Allison politely says everyone is amazing and you can’t put yourself ahead of anyone. Ivan dances to Mario’s “Let Me Love You,” and Ivan has shown that he has learned some interpretation skills with his hip-hop! When asked what he’d like to say to the judges, he offers to shine their shoes! Ha!
The judges leave to deliberate. Out comes Ne-Yo, new R&B sensation. Ne-Yo is quickly becoming the new Usher. This is news to the old Usher, I’m sure. He’s making a home with midtempo R&B that is ridiculously easy on the ears. Ne-Yo is quite the little showman!
With the solos done, my bet is there is no way in hell Allison is leaving. She just had another chance to make America like her. That slightly goofy girlish giggle makes her a favorite of boys all over the social spectrum, and for girls who like their idols approachable, Allison is all of that. Ivan is not leaving either. He’s maturing and dancing with great confidence.
Heidi has wowed the judges too often to let her go. She has amassed an impressive body of work. Jessica… not so much. Jaymz, I believe, has danced his way past Ryan, who I am sure never saw this coming. Ryan’s dancing was excellent, but a bit introverted, while Jaymz went for the jugular.
So I say Jessica and Ryan are leaving us.
Nigel begins by congratulating all six dancers for their solos. They actually danced like they wanted to be there.
Allison, step forward. Nigel says that they all believe Allison is among the best overall dancers on the show, and she meets every challenge. They may not agree with Mary that she will win it all, but they definitely want her to stay.
Jessica, step forward. Nigel says she is the first to do point-work on the show. It was fantastic. Nigel says her technique is great, but he’s not seeing enough personality. He wants to see more.
Heidi, step forward. Nigel says no one can say Heidi doesn’t show personality, but sometimes, she overdoes it. But she is having fun, and her technique is stealthily excellent. That is why she is staying.
That means Jessica is leaving. Funeral video.
Now the guys. Nigel says this one was not unanimous at first, but Mary came around. He’ll explain later.
Jaymz, step forward. Nigel clarifies that Jaymz’ specialties are ballet and hip hop. Jaymz adds ballroom, and sums up that he does everything. Ignoring him, Nigel says the judges found it strange that he did a paso when he is fighting for his life. They thought he would go for his trump cards. Step back.
Ryan, step forward. Nigel reminds them they lost Ben, a great technician, and he fought for Ben and lost. (Really?) Nigel worries that Ryan is getting lost in technique and not entertaining anymore. Step back.
Ivan, Nigel says, is not a great dancer yet, and it is a dilemma. Nigel says Dan remarked that if Ivan weren’t as great as he was tonight, he would be going home. But he was great and Ivan can go relax.
Ivan, to uproarious applause, steps into the arms of a thrilled Allison.
Ryan, step forward. Nigel says Mary wanted him gone, but Nigel and Dan saved him, Ryan is continuing, Jaymz is going home. Ryan is warned that he’d better bring it next week!
That was an interesting call. I thought Jaymz had done enough to stay. Guess you never know!
Next week, the final twelve… the last week of partnering, then it’s every dancer for themselves! Let’s see how it all plays out!
