Episode 11 Insider Clips The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 11 Insider Clips - Final 3 = Bleh
by Heathyr Fields Ford -- 05/04/2007
The good news is, we get a lot of Danny & Oswald this week on the insider clips. The bad news is, it's because they were eliminated. Plus, Eric & Danielle's relationship continues to play out, and Charla & Mirna continue to be themselves.
While paying for the internet at my hotel in downtown Chicago, I failed to find the desire, time, and ability really to review the clips from last week. I apologize for that! However, I’m back this week, albeit running behind and feeling off-kilter. I haven’t traveled in ages, and while I enjoyed it, my checkbook aches, and my office desk obviously missed me.
Boo to Oswald & Danny leaving, and boo to Oswald & Danny for their Charla & Mirna love. It astounds me. While from their interview it looks like they sort of saw the Mirna thing, so that’s good. Charla apart from Mirna probably is quite likeable. Who knows.
Anyway, on to the clips!
Elimination Station
Drew thinks Charla & Mirna need the money more than Danny & Oswald, but someone says she’s a lawyer. Drew retorts he could walk in with a briefcase and do better than her. Heh. Then we’re at the pool, and everyone’s got to pack to meet up near the finish line. Amber quips she doesn’t like it since they have to cheer another team on, and Drew misses his wife but could stay there another month. Jill’s looking forward to seeing who the fourth place team is and watching the finish.
Cut to everyone loading into the van, and they can’t believe it’s time to go. Lots of ‘rapido’ and ‘aeroporto vamanos’ and I groan as I think of the Weavers. With another cut, they are there, and everyone eliminated joins up together. Jill expresses disappointment at seeing Oswald & Danny and wishes they could have spent time together in Acapulco if they were going to get eliminated! Oswald wants Charla & Mirna to win, Drew thinks they will, but Kevin thinks it’s Eric & Danielle. Mary is pulling for the Beauty Queens and says she has all along.
Pit Stop Cam
Once again, nada.
Mat Chats
Dustin & Kandice: Phil asks if anyone in particular they will think of to gain strength, and Kandice states its her sister, who is a real fighter. Plus, they both think of her dad because of the military base. She says the race is like skills, random things you never think you’ll use. Dustin is excited to be there, and she and Kandice hug. Kandice reveals that they would not have come back if they didn’t believe they had a good shot at winning, but that doesn’t keep it from being exciting.
Phil asks if they’re nervous. They are, but Kandice says she would be devastated if not in the top three, and that Dustin told her she would meltdown if not in top three. Kandice says that’s not pretty. Heh. Dustin believes the difference of working in strength and franticness is slowing down, being calm and calculating and confidence in abilities. Kandice responds to Phil that Dustin is an amazing racer because of her skills and determination. Dustin believes that Kandice is her cheerleader, and she knows Dustin so well that she can coach her when needed. Dustin says Kandice brings out the positive and brings out what she needs even when she doesn’t know herself what that is.
Eric & Danielle: Phil asks how they weigh their chances this time. Eric believes he and Jeremy blew it, and this time if they can limit their mistakes they will do fine. Eric grins that they haven’t won a leg yet, so they need to win the one that counts, as that’s what matters.
He quips that he’ll buy stuff that was given away and then throw it away. Eric will be disappointed not to win. They need to focus and read clues, he says, and he wants the money as he’s got a lot of stuff such as a sister getting married. Phil wonders if the money will help them together. Eric says the money will be separated, each in their own pot, and she’ll go through hers quickly. She disagrees. They do say it might help the long distance stuff, etc, although I read somewhere they moved in together right before this started, so color me confused!
Danielle wants the money so she doesn’t have to get a job right away and plan out her future. She wants to save the money for the future. Phil asks if Eric is in her future, and she doesn’t know, and she says their relationship is good, and they take it one day at a time. Eric agrees, and Phil says you sound like just good friends. Eric doesn’t want to be in New York, and she doesn’t want to leave yet with school. Eric quips he won’t work as much, and Phil laughs. Eric mentions he’ll throw a party and invites the pretty greeter girl. Heh. He compares their team to Joseph & Monica, good friends, from their race and how they got almost this far and got eliminated, never having won a leg. Ah, Mojo. Shudder.
Charla & Mirna: Charla says a race like this is very scary because you don’t always know where the other teams are. She cites today when she thought she was the last person, and then saw Oswald at the helicopter pick up area. She says she hugged every naval officer she met, and she was so excited. Heh. A lot of that positive attitude comes from how closely connected they are, per Phil, and Charla agrees with him. She does not doubt their relationship for a second.
Mirna goes on about how they would not do certain things, and they would never quit, and so on. They are smart about how they think about each roadblock, so she is right about that, as she explains they try to ensure that the last roadblock gives them a choice as to who does what. Mirna explains they will sit down and plot and plan at the Pit Stop to figure out how they will win this race. The other teams told Phil they are the best at the airports, and they nod. Mirna agrees and says today is the day to do whatever it takes in the airport to get the best tickets.
Phil asks how special it is to see each other so frequently on this race when real life keeps them so busy. Charla finds it extra special because they grew up together, and now they get to spend more fun moments together. Mirna says it brings stressful moments, but the best moments of all when you feel like kids again. If I only saw this clip of the two, I would actually really like them. Sadly, I’ve seen more than just this, and I know the truth.
Oswald & Danny’s Parting Words: Danny explains that Oswald has a great, warm, loving heart and is supportive and patient with him. They get each other. Oswald says he cannot put together a Rubik’s cube, but he can put together Danny. Phil asks him to describe Danny, but Oswald says that in trying to explain the essence of someone, you can miss the point. People are ethereal, you love a person because of a vibe and chemistry. Any relationship is an even exchange of energy, not an emotional vampire sucking the life out of the other person. I just fell a little bit in love with Oswald.
No regrets whatsoever, they tell Phil, and there are moments of frustration. Oswald says he’ll never go back to Macau, as that was a horrible leg. Danny suggests they get Portuguese off their signs. Danny feels there was a lot of positive energy along the race. Oswald wants Charla & Mirna to win, and Danny agrees. Oswald feels the Beauty Queens do not possess beauty on the inside. I disagree with them there. Oswald & Danny agree that Eric & Danielle are both too young, and so on. Danny says he watched season 10 more, and he saw a lot of their manners and way of being, and he felt he had a good handle on who Dustin & Kandice were. Oswald hopes that Eric & Danielle invest in self-actualization. Oh. My. God. You must go watch this clip. Danny grumps about his icky clothes, and Oswald jokes he’s going to burn his. Danny makes some comment about ruining his shirt, so Oswald rips it right down the chest (it’s a t-shirt). First off, totally hot. Secondly, nah, just that, totally hot. Then Phil quips about having to wax him. Hah!
I appreciate who these two seem to be as people, and by and large, I think they’ve got a pretty good handle on others. I believe they give Charla & Mirna too much credit, and Dustin & Kandice not enough. However, these are two amazing guys with an excellent friendship that we should all be envious of! And they’re welcome to come by my tiny corner of central Washington and make me feel good any day!
Episode Clips
Last Wishes of Oswald & Danny: In the car, Oswald says his idea of traveling is not having to book his own tickets, and having it all arranged for him, and to just show up, Danny interjects. Oswald agrees. They like to stay in comfortable places with a concierge to help out. I so agree, after just staying at the Fairmont Olympic in downtown Seattle. That’s the life! Anyway, they talk about the race being a humbling experience and didn’t have the accessibility to the five star hotels and first class. Danny notes a beautiful Rolls out the car window.
Crazy Cars for Mirna and Danny: Danny tells Charla that they took the one Mirna had before, the pink one, and it was horrible. Mirna is backing the car up, and Danny pulls Charla out of the way as they probably fear for their lives. Some good natured joking about the pink car and the windshield wipers going off ensues. They are at the visitor center for the base. More talk about the car. Danny says he had people push him in her car. Mirna was happy, she says, because it was an automatic car. Oswald does not know how to drive really well, but Danny does stick and automatic. Oswald for one job had a chauffeur for security, but he still claims he can go backwards or forwards in a car if driving!
Oswald Plays 20 Questions in Guam: Oswald relaxes and explains that when he gets back to New York, he’s going to sleep for hours, not leave his apartment, and order favorite foods for hours on end. Danny agrees that is what he’ll do in Miami for Day One. Day Two, Oswald will go to a spa and get everything in his body rubbed. Danny will be at the Miami Mandarin Oriental. Oswald will be at the New York one. They joke about the food and drink they will order there. On Day 3, he’ll go see his family and get a fix of Cuban food. Danny has to pick up dogs on Day 1 so he can’t get away from seeing family. Oswald jokes that perhaps he’ll get laid as well as he integrates himself back into the real world. Danny feels that is a definite.
Oswald talks about how on the race, you don’t get the opportunity to get the local flavor, so you don’t appreciate it as much as normal traveling. He has made mental notes, he explains, about places to return to. He will not return to Macau, and perhaps not Zanzibar. Krakow is a destination they both agree on, and they see it as Barcelona versus Madrid, more enjoyable and provincial. He thinks possibly Mozambique for an adventure.
Charla & Mirna are Sleepy Heads: Mirna and Charla ride in the car, and she explains that her watch alarm is dead, and Charla’s watch is missing. Mirna pretty much blames Charla, and Charla gets back on her about it. Basically, Mirna’s watch alarm does not work, and Charla’s has stopped working, but Mirna keeps saying “my watch alarm doesn’t work, and Charla’s watch is left somewhere else” as if these are not the same issues. She is so frustrating. Mirna tells her to let it go. God.
Charla & Mirna make a Friend in Guam: Mirna chats up the military driver and they ask if he enjoys it. He enjoys the Air Force and has been part of it for six years. He’s been stationed at Abilene before here. They agree it’s a lovely island. He jokes that at least they don’t have to sleep in a tent, but they explain they did that in earlier legs. More talk on how nice Guam is. This was his third choice, Italy and Japan, were top two. They ask if he flies the planes, and he says no, that he’s a personal trainer. He looks it. Rowr! He explains they all have to stay in shape. He still eats his share of fast food, but it’s all in knowing how to get it out once you get it in. A line formerly said by Ron Jeremy. Then they talk about something that was struck by lightning or someone and survived. I don’t care enough about them to rewind it and listen to the Sprint ads again to get the right story!
Eric & Danielle’s Future Drill Sergeant: Eric asks how long his driver how long he’s been stationed there. He talks about the amazing scuba diving and other fun things. He takes jujitsu classes, which is nifty. It’s so expensive to leave the island, that he’s only been back home once, he explains. He works with munitions, we learn as he answers Eric’s question. He wants to be a DI, drill instructor, in San Antonio later, and Eric jokes that he must like yelling at people. He then volunteers Danielle up to be yelled at, and she says she’d just laugh. The driver explains that even the hardest person learns not to laugh at times like that. Heh. Yep, don’t eff with the drill sergeants!
Danielle Breathes a Sigh of Relief in Guam: Eric is like I’m not mad at you, you did a good job, but Danielle says he would have hated her during the task. She explains that you have to wait 15 minutes for the helicopter to come, so they have a bit of a cushion. She explains how she got lost a lot. He calls her a knucklehead, and she totally agrees, and so do I. She explains how she realized she was an idiot or retarded as she remembered that Dustin came down the road she went to three times but didn’t go down, which led to the helicopters. Heh.
The Beauty Queens Make a Blunder: Dustin & Kandice run to the cars to see if they are marked, and they decide they’re not. Kandice points out they are all the same, so it makes sense they’d be the marked cars. They keep running elsewhere, and these are the scenes I feel bad for the camera people following them. They come to an employee parking lot and still find no marked cars. They talk about how those first cars really seemed right, but how they weren’t marked. Eric joins them, so they decide to go back to the original vans, since the clue said in front of the departures. And voila, they are marked. Silly people. Slow down, pay attention! They hop in the car, and Kandice asks Dustin if they cannot run when they don’t know where they’re going, so they can walk and check more carefully. They need to slow down, Kandice says, and Dustin agrees.
Kandice on Growing Up in a Military Family: Kandice asks if the Navy and Air Force have big rivalries in Guam, but the Navy driver doesn’t think so. Kandice mentions she used to live on a base when little, and talks about the base playgrounds, and commissaries, and such. They notice a pretty church and ask the driver about it. Dustin talks about how she went to Westpoint once and saw the chapel that you have to be a cadet to get married at. Some nice scenery shots. They ask how bizarre it is to be at sea for a long time then on land. Dustin thinks you’d miss land, but the woman says you don’t. Yep, you just adapt, I’d imagine.
It’s Not About the Money for Oswald & Danny: Post-leg, Danny talks about how not compromising who he is is worth more than a million dollars. He has enough as it is. After taxes, you each get about $300,000, and it’s not worth compromising yourself, Oswald says. Danny mentions that he got a lot of flak last time he said that, but Oswald will not apologize for being successful. For them, a million dollars is the icing on the cake, and they are set in what is important in life, but some of the others are not at that point in life yet. You cannot take away the moments and experiences in life. The way they ran the race, Oswald says, was like an Oswald & Danny bubble, even though they interact with other people. They ran the race, he says, the way they wanted to run it, as really good friends having a fantastic time and kept integrity and dignity. He concludes that they had a hell of a time.
Charla & Mirna Have Plans for the Cash: Post-leg. Charla & Mirna have too many t-shirts with their guys’ pictures on it. Charla says that the million dollars would mean they could try harder to have a child (i.e. it would pay for more IVF for her and her husband). For Mirna, she says it would change their entire lives, and allow them to take the time to have a family. Mirna’s three main high school life wishes are to travel the world, marry the man of her dreams, and being the best lawyer she can. She feels she’s fulfilled them all now. The million dollars will give her the chance to have kids and take time away from work with them would be great.
Danielle Needs a Timeout from Eric: Post-leg. Danielle needs a separate corner from Eric at the end of the race since it’s been so long with 24/7, so take a few weeks of alone time. She says they get along fine, and no matter what, they’ll always be friends. He’s like “are you breaking up with me?” and she laughs. Eric agrees that they get along well, and she says that this is a crazy experience to have together, although you don’t enjoy each other that much during the race. Danielle talks about the killer fatigue. Eric says you are so tired, you smell horrible in your clothes, and you just lie down and sleep, you don’t even care about a shower. Heh. They actually show more “couple like” behavior here, like teasing in a fun way and hugs. Eric thinks that intimate relationships on the race don’t do well because of the pressure and stress, and so much gets taken out of context. At the end of the day, he says, everything is fine with them. While there is some merit to what they’re saying, some of it is really because the two of them aren’t quite “there” in a maturity level, because Joe & Bill are in an intimate relationship, and they certainly had a different racing experience than what Eric & Danielle are presenting as “just how couples would react” on a race.
