Episode 11: Girl Who Walked Through the Ancient City (5/10) The competition begins with a slew of go-sees in the city of Bangkok, and for the first time in ANTM history, no one wins the challenge because of a universal lack of punctuality. That sting is eased when the girls take a jaunt to the island paradise of Phuket for some down time and a swimsuit photo shoot. Sara and Danielle's pictures are lovely, but they each have characteristics that are consistently problematic. In the end, Sara's impressive progress as a model isn't enough to keep her in the running and she is eliminated.
WHAT'S GOING ON?
Following Furonda's elimination, Jade is frustrated at having landed in the bottom two for the fourth time. "I don't belong there, man... What is going on?" Danielle's also worried about her elocution and is attempting to suppress her "southern country girl" accent. Meanwhile, animosity is growing about Sara's presence in the final four. Having been discovered in a mall, Sara wants the others to know she is just as dedicated as they are, while Joanie feels that she's less deserving than herself, Danielle and Jade.
IT'S TUK-TUK, NOT PUT-PUT
The girls glean from a Tyra Mail that go-sees are coming down the pike and they're brought to a beautiful temple to get started. Designer Pichita Rucksajit gives everyone some advice: remove your shoes upon entry and keep a smile on your face. Joanie takes the suggestions seriously, but wonders if the other girls are doing the same. Pichita has set up some go-sees around the city. The designers will assess for four criteria: 1) knowledge of Thai customs; 2) general appearance; 3) portfolio; and 4) runway walk. She also gives them a map and some money to purchase gifts for the designers they'll be visiting. With that, she sends the girls on their way, reminding them that they only have until 4:30 to complete their tasks. "Don't be late," she says with a smile.
The four race around a gift shop, searching for what they think will be appropriate gifts. As she makes her purchase, Sara leaves her portfolio behind. "Good way to start," she jokes. The girls must ride in open air cabs called tuk-tuks, and Jade is not a fan of the transportation because of the wind and heat. Sara is nervous about her go-sees having never been on one, while Danielle is more focused on the logistics. "I am not good with directions… I have a feeling I'm going to look up and see a sign that says, 'Welcome to Korea.'"
CLOCKWATCHERS THEY'RE NOT
Sara makes a great first impression at her first visit with Rai Von Bueren, but her runway walk is rather stiff. On Joanie's lingerie go-see with Disaya Prakobsantisukh, she ends up donning a frog's head (the theme of the collection is from Alice in Wonderland). Jade comes in during her visit and later comments, "I don't think Joanie has a lingerie body at all. I think I do." However, Disaya wasn't fond of Jade's dour expression. "She looked a bit moody to me." On Danielle's first visit, she is frustrated to realize she's forgotten to take off her shoes, but the designer likes her photos. Sara's walk is an issue on another go-see, and she's intimidated by Jade as she comes in for her meeting.
When 4:30 rolls around, everyone's caught in a miserable traffic jam. Joanie and Sara make it around fifteen minutes late, and Pichita isn't happy. Danielle arrives about twenty minutes after that, but Jade is nowhere to be found. She's decided it's better to be late than miss a go-see, so she doesn't roll in until about 5:40. Finally, evaluations begin with Sara, and though the designers saw potential, her stiffness is an issue. Danielle's walk was well-regarded, but her "general appearance is not strong." The designers loved Jade's look, but she wasn't as nice as the other girls, while Joanie didn't stand out from the crowd enough. In the end, no one wins because they were all late, but if they had to choose Danielle would have been the winner. The prize: a whole wardrobe of all the designers' clothes. "Shut up! Please punch me in the face," quips a disappointed Danielle.
PARADISE LOST AND FOUND
However, that disappointment doesn't last when the girls find out they'll be traveling to the island of Phuket, which Jade calls "paradise." They're thrilled to be visiting the tropical beaches and hoping for some snorkeling and scuba. Their new hotel is gorgeous, right near the beach. But the tension regarding Sara's dedication surfaces in anger and annoyance again for Jade and for Joanie. "I feel like a bitch," complains Joanie. "But the reason it hit me now is that she copies off of me."
Tyra Mail gives a few hints as to what's next, but first they get a visit from Tyra herself. Tyra explains that while the island of Phuket seems like a paradise, disaster struck in the form of a tsunami of December 26, 2004. Since then, the island has been rebuilt, but they all take a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives, and those who had to start anew. The reality of the situation allows the girls who'd been feeling the pressure rise between them to put it aside and be grateful for their collective experience.
Later, everyone travels to a beach for their next photo shoot. It's for ELLEgirl and amp'd mobile. Jay surprises the girls when he informs that that the clients are here. He introduces Christy Bayle from ELLEgirl and Eric Crane from OP swimwear, whose bikinis they'll be modeling. Another surprise comes when Jay announces the photographer for the day: Nigel. Everyone is excited to shoot with him, though Jade is a little intimidated.
WATER IS NOT ALWAYS OUR FRIEND
Joanie is up first, and the waves crash in on her as she poses against the rocks. The water is rough, but Nigel feels that she did a solid job. As Sara prepares, Jay advises, "Don't let the struggle show on your face." She stresses out as the client reps observe, especially considering the added tension of having Nigel shoot the photo. Nigel tries and tries to get her to relax her face, but only when she moves out of the water and on to the sand is she able to refocus her energy. Jade has a tough time staying balanced on a rocking boat, but she sticks with it. For the first time Nigel is really impressed with Jade's performance. "A girl who takes risks--sometimes that pays off... She won me over." At the beginning of her shoot, Danielle has trouble keeping her thoughts from the tsunami and the water that caused so much devastation. With Nigel's help, she's able to capture a few with a softer look appropriate for the client.
The girls arrive back in Bangkok to learn that another elimination will take place the following day. When the time comes, the girls file in to meet the judges, which include guest judge Disaya Prakobsantisukh. Danielle is up first and the judges evaluate her snapshots from the go-sees. She has two okay shots, one in her street clothes, one in the designer's clothes. She admits to the judges that the environment got to her, but Miss J. doesn't accept that as an excuse. Her swimsuit photo is lovely, though the pose gets some criticism for its sexiness. "For men's magazines, arch the back," Tyra explains. "For women's magazines, hunch the back." Sara looks shy in her first snapshot, and her second is unexceptional. Fortunately, her swimsuit shot is great and Twiggy is thrilled that she wouldn't have even recognized her. Tyra tries to explain that Sara must learn to smile with her eyes, and she demonstrates her own technique. Jade's first snapshot lacks a smile, but her second is softer and prettier. Her swimsuit shot is also excellent, and Nigel reveals how proud he was to have seen a new side of Jade. Joanie's first snapshot emphasizes her gorgeous bone structure. Unfortunately, her second could use some improvement as far as posture goes. Her swimsuit is admired all around; Disava likes that it reveals her versatility, while Miss J. believes it makes her look younger.
THE MALL DISCOVERY REACHES THE END
Deliberations begin with Joanie. She continues to receive rave reviews from Twiggy, and Tyra likes the fact that with her hair pulled back she looks like a model. However, Nigel doesn't believe she has more than one look to offer. Danielle is beautiful in Disaya's eyes, but her pose is…not so much. Her country accent is addressed once more. "She's not trying," Tyra grumbles. "She's not listening to us." Sara gets points from Nigel on her physique, but Miss J isn't sure that Sara's the right choice to be a top model. As for Jade, Disaya didn't like her attitude at her go-see, and Twiggy doesn't like her attitude ever. "She's always on the defensive. It's never her fault, she's never wrong, and it drives me nuts." But Nigel believes that "Jade knows how to model," and that's what's kept her in the game so far.
When the decision is made, the final four return for the results. Joanie is called first, followed by an extremely relieved Jade. That leaves Sara and Danielle, who step forward to hear the bad news. The judges think Sara is the most improved model of the four, but they also wonder if her efforts are enough to take her to the end. As for Danielle, her speech remains a problem. "The winner has to be articulate; she has to speak eloquently," Tyra explains. But Danielle will have another chance to change her fortunes when Tyra hands over her photo and Sara is eliminated.
Sara hugs the competition before packing her things and leaving the hotel. "I think that people questioned my desire to be here. It sounds bad that I was found in a mall, but modeling is something I've never done before. It's been something creative and artistic that allowed me to show a different side of myself." She's grateful for the turn her life took when she was discovered. "I was just trying to pick out a cute shirt at the mall and since then I've gotten to do so many things."
