Episode 10 - Caution: Whining Ahead The Amazing Race: All-Stars, Episode 10 - Caution: Whining Ahead
by Jenn Brasler -- 04/23/2007
Just when you thought people had stopped complaining about the Yield, another one pops up. Only this time, it’s use isn’t as simple. How much does a Yield cost? How much will the Yielded team complain about it? And since Kandice & Dustin can’t use this one, are they in danger of retaliation?
Previously on Everybody Was… You Know: Four teams raced from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong. Charm were way too upset about Kandice & Dustin Yielding Eric & Danielle and tried to scheme to get them out of the race. Too bad Dustin & Kandice rock. Cha3 did another Fast Forward, and though the leg drained all of their money, they came in first. Danielle & Eric proved that karma on the race means nothing and came in last but weren’t eliminated. There are still four teams left:
Oswald & Danny (Cha3) - Friends/Fast Forward kings
Kandice & Dustin - Friends/Still kicking butt and taking names
Charla & Mirna (Charm) - Cousins/Sigh
Eric & Danielle - Dating/Sigh, again
Howdy, Hong Kong! Howdy, Phil’s black shirt, which appears to be Beadazzled. Eh? Can Danielle & Eric survive being marked for elimination? Before anyone leaves, the sponsors get a shout-out with a clip of Cha3 using some Pit Stop time to use the Internet and research their trip back to Hong Kong. They’re the first team to leave at 3:41 a.m. They’re on their way to Macau, China, where they’ll get a clue from a man with a rickshaw. Oswald says that they’ve been fair in the way they’ve dealt with the other teams; they won’t stab anyone in the back to get into the final three. They also don’t want to run out of money, however; remember, they spent all their money on the last leg, and this leg, they only get $73, $50 of which they immediately have to spend for a ferry. They consider prostituting themselves.
Dustin & Kandice leave. Dustin says that until the final three, they’ll race like they’re in last place. It’ll be like wild animals fighting for food. Kandice hopes that they stay ahead of the other teams and gain a lead.
Cha3 get their clue, which tells them to take a taxi to the tallest structure in Macau. It’s Macau Tower, but the teams have to figure that out themselves. Plus, there’s a Yield ahead. Oh, terrific. Phil lets us know that since Dustin & Kandice have already used a Yield in the race, they can’t use this one. Through some charades, Cha3 learn from a taxi driver that they need to go to Macau Tower. Oswald says that it’s best to use the Yield on the team right behind them, which is Kandice & Dustin. They don’t think they’ll have to use it, though. They arrive at Macau Tower, but it doesn’t open until 10 a.m.
Dustin & Kandice get their clue. They know they can’t use the Yield, and they’re concerned that someone will use it on them.
Charm leave. Mirna interviews that some people think she should treat Charla differently because she’s special, but Charla doesn’t want that. Mirna thinks the other teams probably see her as a tyrant, but she’s here to win. The two aren’t mutually exclusive? On the ferry, the cousins fear motion sickness.
Cha3 worry about money. They have about $16 left after the ferry and taxi fees. Uh oh. Dustin & Kandice catch up with them at Macau Tower and discuss the Yield with them; they can’t believe there’s another one on the race. Danny jokingly threatens to use it on them. Oswald then says that they have an offer for Dustin & Kandice: if Dustin & Kandice give them some money, Cha3 won’t Yield them. Nice trade. Dustin & Kandice head off to discuss the trade.
Charm get their clue. Dustin & Kandice count their money and determine that they have about $200 left. They discuss who it would be better to race against in the final three. They don’t want to kick Eric & Danielle while they’re down, so this is a big decision. Kandice points out that they’re also trusting that Cha3 will keep their word about not Yielding them. Nearby, Oswald is worried but Danny is calmer. Finally, Dustin & Kandice hand over $45 for Cha3 to Yield Danielle & Eric. They joke that now they’re officially the Yield Queens.
Eric & Danielle leave. Eric says that he doesn’t like being in this position and having to fight from the bottom of the pack. They can’t afford to make mistakes. Danielle says this is a horrible time to be marked for elimination because it’s right before the final three.
Charm get to Macau Tower and meet up with Cha3 and Dustin & Kandice. Dustin tries to be nice to Mirna. She then spots a sign about this building having the world’s highest sky jump, and it’s suddenly clear why they’re at the building. Mirna pretends to leave.
At 10 a.m., the first three teams enter. Dustin & Kandice are first, followed by Cha3 and Charm. They have to draw numbers and wait another hour to take the elevator up for the task. Apart from the other three, Charla offers Cha3 some money, but Danny says they’re okay and they’ll figure it out. Oswald adds that they recouped some losses, but he’s grateful for her generosity. Dustin & Kandice hope Charla and Cha3 didn’t just make a deal.
Eric & Danielle get their clue and head to the Macau Tower. Kandice says that if they’re all on the same elevator, they can run ahead of the other teams. At 11 a.m., the three teams head up to the 61st floor. That’s never fun. Up there, Oswald is the first off the elevator, and he and Danny Yield Eric & Danielle. Mirna gets on her soapbox and interviews that the Yield isn’t necessary. Why use it at the beginning of a leg when the Yielded team could catch up and pass them? It’s not logical. Oswald asks for a refresher on how to put up the photos on the Yield board, and Kandice tells him to let her and Dustin show them. Hee.
The clue is a Roadblock, and of course, one team member has to do the sky jump - it’s the highest jump in the show’s history. Before the jump, the team member has to walk around the rim of the observation deck, then jump down 660 feet. They’ll get the next clue on the ground. Kandice, Danny, and Charla do the task. As Kandice gets suited up, she asks one of the jump workers if she should keep her clothes on. He tells her yes, unless she wants to strip. Hee. Oswald is sure Danny will love this task. Charla laughs that everyone else has short sleeves, but hers are long.
Eric claims to not be worried about being Yielded. He just hopes someone has Yielded Dustin & Kandice. Speaking of Kandice, she’s the first to do the walk, and if she’s nervous, she’s doing a good job of hiding it. Charla is glad not to be going first. Kandice says this is all psychological. Dustin feels for her so much that she’s tearing up on the ground. Danny walks and is having a great time. Charla walks and has trouble fighting the wind but doesn’t seem that nervous. She’s never done anything like this before and can’t believe she’s doing it now.
Kandice gets ready to jump and laughingly asks if it’s safe. She’s definitely nervous now, especially since it’s windy. Well, she’s 660 feet up, so of course it’s windy. She jumps, shrieking a little, but seems to have fun. Dustin runs over to greet her and Kandice assures her it was great, though she was nervous. Their clue sends them to Lou Lim Ioc Garden to find their next clue.
Eric & Danielle arrive at Macau Tower as Kandice & Dustin leave. On the ground, Oswald tells Mirna that they basically sold their Yield to Dustin & Kandice. Mirna says that she and Charla would have given them money. Oswald says they didn’t want to use the Yield, but that was the decision they made. Mirna interviews that that was like making a deal with the devil.
Danielle & Eric head up to the 61st floor as Eric says that if it’s a Roadblock, Danielle can do it. He’s kidding right? They still hope Dustin & Kandice have been Yielded and they can make up some ground. Up top, they see that they’ve been Yielded and Eric swears at Cha3’s picture. Poor baby. He says they suck and flips Danny off. Oswald says that they were desperate. It doesn’t make him feel good, but it was in the spirit of the game. Thank you! In their cab, Dustin & Kandice note that this will be hard for Eric & Danielle because they’re already behind.
Charla watches as Danny jumps. When Danny lands, Oswald says he should’ve done the task, then calls Danny a jumping bean. They’re happy to have money now. Danny says something about explaining the consequences. It was bad karma vs. no money, and without money, they could have been eliminated. Eric says he started out trusting Cha3, but now things are different and he no longer respects them. Yeah, I really can’t stand Eric anymore (not that I ever liked him much to begin with). It’s a freaking game. The Yield gives you an advantage. I have no doubt that Eric would have used it if he could have, so he can just shut up.
Charla’s about to jump. She says it’s a lot scarier than she thought. She jumps and screams. On the ground, she tells Mirna that the first step was really frightening. In a cab, Mirna tells Charla about Cha3 selling their Yield. Mirna thinks their plan backfired because now Eric & Danielle will be more motivated.
Kandice & Dustin have a “bad taxi” that sets them back a little. Over in Cha3’s cab, Oswald is relaxed and focused, but that doesn’t mean he’s not feeling competitive. As Kandice & Dustin get another cab, Eric & Danielle’s hourglass finishes and Eric suits up for the Roadblock, threatening to kick Cha3. He’s freaked out by the walk around the rim, saying he could die. Doubtful. Danielle says that this could be the start of their last leg of the race, and that’s scary. Eric jumps and is glad to be alive. He says the pressure’s on; they need to get things done and regain time. He adds that Cha3 are cowards. That doesn’t even make sense. They’re cowards for trying to get ahead?
Oswald says that without the Yield deal, he and Danny wouldn’t have any money and might not make it to the end of the leg. Kandice says her and Dustin’s goal is to be calm and collected. Charm’s driver claims to know where the garden is.
For some reason, they’re making this all tense as to who will arrive first. It’s Cha3, who wish they could stop and smell the roses, but they have to hurry to the Detour. The choices are Noodle and Dragon. In Noodle, teams make noodles. Yep, that’s about it. In Dragon, teams pick up a drum and dragon head and carry them to a dock. There, they have to attach the head to a matched dragon boat and give the drum to a coxswain to get the next clue. Cha3 pick Dragon because they did a dragon task during their original season.
Kandice & Dustin arrive at the garden. They think Dragon will take longer, so they pick Noodle. They want to pay close attention, not panic, and work quickly and efficiently. Charm get to the Detour and also pick Noodle.
Oswald doesn’t want to get frustrated, but his and Danny’s driver seems to be lost. Danielle totally wipes out in the garden and Eric just laughs at her. How sweet. They pick Noodle and hope to do it quickly. Oswald murmurs his own version of the serenity prayer, including the line, “Give me the intelligence to hide the body of this man once I’m done.”
Kandice & Dustin get to Noodle, which involves practically humping a long pole to flatten the noodles - or, as Dustin calls it, “riding the pony.” Cha3’s taxi driver takes them to the end of the Detour instead of the beginning. Oops! They get directions from someone else and Oswald says they’re in a deep valley with no light or water. Well, except that it’s pouring rain outside.
Kandice & Dustin start rolling their noodles. They get a cutting demonstration, then start cutting. Charm aren’t even there yet, by the way. Kandice & Dustin’s noodles are too thick, though, and they have to re-roll them. Charm arrive and say they cook with their moms all the time. Kandice rides the pony again.
Cha3 get to the right place and try to play charades with a taxi driver to figure out where the lake is. Mirna and Kandice ride their ponies. Kandice says that Charm straddling and bouncing on the pole was like a crazy movie. Charla is also on top of the pole. It’s weird.
Eric hopes everyone’s sucking at Noodle. Unfortunately for him, Dustin & Kandice are already done. Their clue sends them to a car for the next clue. As they leave, they spot Eric & Danielle arriving and realize they’re not that far behind.
Eric rides the pony and complains about Danielle’s efforts. He wants to finish and kill Cha3. There’s cutting and bundling, and Charm think they’re done but have to start over. Mirna blames Charla and asks her to be helpful by… watching.
Cha3 are getting a little bicker-y. (Not a word? It is now!) Danielle & Eric manage to pass Charm, and now they’re leaving in second place. Impressive. Mirna wants Charla to observe and figure out how to do the task right, because maybe that would be helpful. “Yeah, I guess so,” Charla replies, totally not wanting to listen to her. Ha!
Oswald thinks he and Danny are in the wrong place. They also don’t know where their taxi is. Danny says they’ve wasted a lot of time and it’s time to ask for directions. No one can help them, though. They head off again, thinking they picked the harder task.
Kandice & Dustin think they’re in second place because Cha3 are ahead of them. They get to the cars and say they’re little Barbie cars. They’re on their way to the island of Taipa and the Pit Stop. Dustin takes the driving responsibilities.
Eric says he and Danielle have definitely made up some ground. He hopes Charm mess up again. Mirna is still chastising Charla’s decisions both during the task and in an interview. She tells Charla to just accept that she screwed up and move on. Because if there’s anything Mirna can do, it’s accept things the way they really happened. Charla says that we’re not all perfect like some people. Awesome. Charm are finally done with Noodle.
Cha3 are still wandering and not happy. More bickering. Kandice & Dustin get directions and, as usual, find someone to follow. Eric & Danielle get to the cars and also find someone to follow. Eric possibly jinxes himself by saying he hopes they have no trouble getting to the Pit Stop. Cha3 get to the lake and start trying to fit their dragon head into the right boat. They get it and the rowers there clap. They hope this time their taxi driver knows where to go.
Dustin & Kandice are a little worried about their car. Eric says it’s reverse stick shift and others might have some trouble. Danielle just hopes they get there with 30 minutes to spare. Charm get to cars and get someone to follow. Mirna drives, of course, and isn’t sure where the brake is. She asks Charla to try to drive, then promptly drives into a curb. There are unhappy people behind them. Mirna has no idea what she’s doing and just gets out of the car.
Cha3 think they can catch up. Mirna tries to reverse the car by tugging on the bumper. She doesn’t want to die. Why is she going to die like this? I don’t get her at all. But that’s nothing new. With some help, Charm get back on the right track.
Cha3 get to the cars, making sure to get a pink one. They’re also worried about the trip. Dustin & Kandice see that they’re heading for the mountains. Eric & Danielle stop for directions. The two teams approach the Pit Stop, and Dustin & Kandice make it there first. Yay! They can’t believe it. They’ve also won Waverunners. They tell Phil about the Yield sale and how it helped them get a lead. He notes that it worked for them.
Danielle & Eric get to the mat in second place and their 30-minute penalty begins. They spend the time bickering and hoping no one arrives within their 30 minutes. Eric says that the other teams don’t deserve it because they’re sneaky and backstabbers. For the love of… I would seriously rather listen to Karlyn than Eric at this point. Dustin & Kandice make the mistake of stopping by to see Danielle & Eric and tell them about the Yield sale. Eric still thinks Cha3 suck and he wants to throw them off a roof. Kandice says she and Dustin feel responsible. Eric says he’ll throw them off the roof, too.
Montage of Charm and Cha3 driving to the Pit Stop. Cha3 think they’ve arrived and start looking for Phil. With 14 minutes and 30 seconds left for Danielle & Eric, Charm arrive at the Pit Stop in third place, which is really second place. Cha3 are in the wrong place and have to go to the other side of the island. Eric & Danielle have a little less than ten minutes left. Eric is sure Cha3 will arrive soon, though.
Five minutes left. This sucks so much. It’s between a team I can’t stand and a team I really like. Three minutes left. Danielle prays. Just as she asks Phil how much time is left, the 30 minutes are up and Danielle & Eric get to check in in third place. Eric says they’re lucky to be there after everything they’ve been through. Thanks, Phil Stacey. He says the rest of his hair is going to fall out. He interviews that he’s not used to being an underdogs, but that’s what he and Danielle are. Danielle adds that no one else has been through what they have, but they’re still in it.
Cha3 finally arrive, and just as I start to mourn, Phil announces that it’s the last non-elimination leg of the race. Yay! Of course, they’re marked for elimination, but we get at least one more episode with them in it. Phil notes that Cha3 made a certain team unhappy. Oh, really? That’s the first I’ve heard of it. I wish the editors wouldn’t exclude such important information.
Phil thinks Eric & Danielle will have some words for Cha3. Oswald says they’re accountable for their actions and they did what they had to do. He interviews that karma bit them in the butt. “Quite hard, I might add,” Danny pipes up hilariously. Oswald says it wasn’t their proudest moment. What, getting some much-needed money and a bit of an advantage? I’d be pretty proud. He says they never intended to use the Yield, and money is the root of all evil. Oh, please. Eric says that Cha3 stabbed him and Danielle in the back, then repeats that he has no respect for them.
Time for the annual montage of the final teams talking about how it’s on. Dustin says no one is holding her and Kandice back. Mirna says she and Charla will get to the final three if it kills them. Nah… too easy. Eric says they just have to focus and move fast. Danny thinks that at the end of the day, he and Oswald will win.
Next week: Charm work with the Air Force on a relief mission. Danielle pulls a Flo. Um, again.
If I ever hear the word “Yield” again, I’m going to scream.
