'Bachelor' No. 8: The Love Doctor
He's not a semi-celebrity, a reality-show retread or a professional athlete. The eighth "Bachelor," in fact, is just a guy. OK -- he's a good-looking ER doctor who's about to finish his residency. But chances are that you haven't heard of Travis Stork before now. The 33-year-old Stork, who's finishing up his residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Tennessee, will become somewhat more famous than that beginning Monday, Jan. 9, when "The Bachelor" returns to ABC. He'll be the first Bachelor to meet his crop of potential future wives overseas, as the show takes place in Paris this time. The identities of the 25 women on the show won't be revealed for a little while, but Stork knew going in what he was looking for -- even if he can't quite verbalize it. "It's the woman who catches my eye," he says, "maybe with the way she smiles, the way I first react to her. I get that feeling inside you really can't describe." A native of Fort Collins, Colo., Stork graduated from Duke University and went on to medical school at the University of Virginia. ABC is pitching him as a real-life "Dr. McDreamy" -- a reference to Patrick Dempsey's "Grey's Anatomy" character -- and "a favorite with all the nurses at Vanderbilt." He's also a cyclist and outdoorsman who enjoys hiking and kayaking. It's here that we should point out that "The Bachelor" has a rather unimpressive record in its stated goal of creating lasting relationships. As far as we know, the two most recent Bachelors, Charlie O'Connell and Byron Velvick, are still with the women they chose (Sarah Brice and Mary Delgado, respectively), but the five who preceded them all broke up with their chosen gal. I've watched all of the other seasons from start to finish so no doubt I will watch this one as well. Our almost-doctor bachelor looks cute yet normal. Hopefully having invested all that time and money into med school, etc., he is not an actor/celebrity wannabe who is doing this show mainly to get famous. We'll see. I wonder how much will be the same old, same old Bachelor standard stuff and how much they will try to switch things up. Doing the show in Paris is one new twist. Since he's a doctor, he must have several functioning brain cells. I wonder if he'll get the usual batch of 25 airheads or if they'll actually have a mostly intelligent crop of bachelorettes for him to chose from.
