August 9 - Crazy Train Rock Star: Supernova, August 9 - Crazy Train
by Jenn Brasler -- 08/10/2006
Crazy, but that’s how it goes / Millions of people living as foes / Maybe it’s not too late / To STOP VOTING FOR ZAYRA.
Brooke is…ug, I just can’t anymore. I don’t care. She’s a sartorial nightmare. Speaking of sartorial nightmares, Josh seems to have stolen Zayra’s hat from last night. Sweetie, no. Hi, Supernova. Hi, Dave. Last night gave Brooke goosebumps. Our mansion footage shows Gilby visiting the singers and giving them all Gibson guitars with their names on them. Storm is thrilled. We revisit song selection, where only Dilana wanted “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” even though everyone knew Gilby would be playing on it. Dave blasted everyone else at the Aztec for not wanting it.
Dilana and Gilby started things off with “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” Lukas got back into the game with “Creep.” Ryan scared everyone with “Paint it Black.” Patrice tried to recover from her bottom three placement with “Instant Karma.” Zayra was Zayra with “All the Young Dudes.” Magni did an awesome job with “The Dolphin’s Cry” and Josh got a surprise assist from Tommy on “Interstate Love Song.” Too bad the band still didn’t care that much for him. Jill went insane with “Mother Mother” and pretty much everyone wants her gone. Toby rocked “Burning Down the House,” even with a random cameo from a megaphone. Storm was also awesome with “We are the Champions.”
More mansion footage. Jill tells Zayra and Storm that everyone is nuts for not wanting to play with Gilby. Storm points out that no one ever said they have to fight over songs. Jill thinks everyone was afraid. She says it comes down to how much they want to be here. Storm notes that Jill didn’t fight for “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” but Jill reminds her that she’s already played with Gilby. Storm rightly replies that Gilby saved her performance. Toby interviews that the females are getting a little catty. Storm says that she didn’t feel pressure to stand up there with Gilby - both of them know she could handle it. Jill thinks lots of people play it safe. Zayra says that it’s about connecting with a song. If you go for a song because someone from Supernova is playing on it but it doesn’t fit your voice, you’re hanging yourself.
Back at the Aztec, Dave addresses Storm, wondering why she thinks Gilby knows she can handle rocking with him. Storm says it’s a good question and that Gilby knows her history and background, so she hopes he would feel comfortable with her on the stage. She tells him she wouldn’t hump him, she would break his back. The editors, who love me, insert a shot of Jill, who was just insulted. Gilby says it’s a question of chemistry. They need to see the singers playing with Supernova to see who fits. Dilana’s actions were awesome because she showed that she has guts.
Tommy greets his “little pretties.” He asks Ryan what happened to the quiet, reserved guy he used to be. Ryan says it’s still all him. Tommy tells him there are still some things about his movements that look uncomfortable. Ryan turns it around to brag that he made Tommy Lee uncomfortable.
Gilby says that last night they saw something from everyone that they hadn’t seen before. Those who make it through tonight get a field trip - they’re going to Vegas on a private jet to see the stage at the Hard Rock Hotel where the winner will play with Supernova on New Year’s Eve. And who knows what else they’ll get into? The singers are, of course, thrilled.
Jason says that last night was one of the best shows ever. It was tough for Supernova to choose just one encore, so they want two. First up will be Lukas. He asks the audience if it’s okay if he does “Creep.” Heh. I still don’t get the Lukas love, though. It’s the same as last night. During the commercials between the encores, they show an ad for Invincible with “Baba O’Riley” playing over it, and now I really miss Dana. After the break, Jason announces that the second encore will be Magni. Yay! This time he does it without his guitar and with the band behind him. The performance is a little harder than last night, but still very good. And he still hits the high notes, so good for him.
Brooke tells us that voting was up 22% this week. She gives us the bottom… well, five - Jill (who shrieks, “Not again!”), Josh (noooo!), Zayra (of course), Ryan (eh), and Patrice (dang). Dave says they keep seeing the same faces in the bottom three. He’s not that surprised at who wound up there this week. Four of them will be staying behind after tonight, and it’s time to crank things up.
After some commercials, Brooke tells us that the first person in the official bottom three is… NOT ZAYRA. She gets to go to Vegas. Grrrr. Words can’t express, people. The real first person in the bottom three is… Jill. Eh, surprise, surprise. Gilby notes that this is her third time, which is disappointing, but she always saves herself. Jill has forgotten that this is not American Idol and will be singing “Respect” by Aretha Franklin. Maybe she thinks she’s leaving and she just wants to sing a song she likes. I just want her to stop yelling. Hey, look, Jill ruined another good song! Sadly, the house band isn’t singing backup, which would have redeemed the performance at least a little.
Instead of going to another commercial, Brooke tells us that the second singer in the bottom three is… Josh. Why, oh why didn’t I vote last night? I’m an idiot. Tommy says he’s starting to get a complex, since he thought they killed their performance. He blames Josh’s guitar. Josh is going to play it again anyway, accompanying himself on Bad Company’s “Shooting Star,” which he dedicates to his friends. And his imaginary Internet girlfriend, right, honey? Josh is awesome, as always. He’s singing straight to me, and I won’t let anyone tell me otherwise. I quiet enjoy my little fantasy world, so leave me be. Unfortunately, Josh is, once again, giving a non-rocking performance, which isn’t good. He just doesn’t listen. He also seems to have contracted Phil’s loose-neck disease.
Brooke scares Patrice by pretending to tell her that she’s in the bottom three. She’s actually going to send us to commercial before she tells us if it’s Patrice or Ryan. When we come back, Brooke tells us that the third singer in the bottom three is… Ryan. And the week after he had the encore, too. Ouch. Jason is surprised to see him there and asks him what he thinks happened. Ryan isn’t sure, since he feels like he’s getting into his comfort zone. Jason thinks people might be confused by his diversity. Ryan announces that he’ll be doing Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence.” He’s made the arrangement a little more current, but he thinks the words are appropriate. This is another one of those songs that I don’t connect the title with the lyrics; I forget that I know it. I like this arrangement a lot. Ryan’s performance is great, probably my favorite of his so far (not counting “Losing My Religion.”
After some deliberating, Gilby tells us that the band had some problems agreeing. He starts with Jill, telling her that she’s been in the bottom three three times, but she winds up saving herself. Josh was great, but they’re not sure about his guitar playing and when he chooses to play it. Ryan is in the bottom three for the first time and has been building some great momentum. However, the band questions his stage presence and his comfort there. They also aren’t sure he can front the band. They think he deserves another chance, though, so he’s safe.
So now it’s the Hatchet Man’s turn. Tommy says they’re bringing this to a whole new level and he wants the safe singers to realize what’s going on. It’s time for a first… and both Jill and Josh are going home. WHAT??? Noooo! And Jill, get your hands off my boyfriend! Dave tells Josh that he’s a great singer and a great artist. He tells Jill that her vocals last night were some of her strongest ever. He thinks they’ll both do well. Jill thanks the band for inspiring her throughout her life and giving her a great experience. She thanks the audience for the same, and the band again for giving her a chance. Storm looks how I feel - exhausted and unhappy. Josh thanks the band and says that he knew from the beginning that he was in a different vein than Supernova, but he appreciates the opportunity. He asks if this means he’s not going to Vegas. Ryan laughs and Josh jokingly jumps on him for it, since he and Jill are getting cut.
Jason says they’ll miss Josh and Jill’s spirits. Josh says he’s a dork, but Jason thinks he’s cool. For the record, Josh hugs Lukas and Jill hugs Magni. As Brooke mentions the trip to Vegas, Tommy and Toby gesture to each other that there will be some drinking. I don’t doubt it. Brooke adds that next week, they’ll be announcing the tour dates for Supernova. Hey, wait - we never heard their lyrics and melodies for the Supernova track! You can get videos of them on the MSN site, but I was hoping we’d see some of them on the show. Oh, well.
Post-show comments: Ryan says he wasn’t surprised that two people were eliminated because the competition is at a new level. He says Josh was his roommate and the house comedian. Jill is a powerhouse and Ryan’s fellow New Yorker. He says she has a great voice and can belt it out at 6 in morning. Ryan thinks he still has the same shot at winning as he did in the beginning (yeah - not much of one) and he still wants to front Supernova.

Re: Elimination Episode I didn't get why two people were eliminated last night. Is everyone involved tired witht he show and wanting it to end a little earlier than expected?
Oh well. As long as Storm isn't eliminated before the finals, I'm happy.
