August 29 – Walking on Broken Glass
Rock Star: Supernova, August 29 – Walking on Broken Glass by Jenn Brasler -- 08/30/2006 Who would think a broken glass would cause so much commotion? Well, with all the drama going around this show, should we really be surprised? Read on to find out what kind of trouble Dilana gets herself into with Magni and a glass. It’s viewers’ choice night, which I guess means that the popular singers get good songs and the less popular singers get bad songs. There were four song choices for each singer, three songs each had sung before and a wildcard, a song that another singer did. Interesting. Hi, Supernova. Hi, band. We get a mini recap of last week, namely the Dilana drama. In this week’s mansion footage, Storm tries to lighten the mood by toasting Dilana’s “first spanking,” but Dilana isn’t in the mood. Thus begins Dilana’s descent into drama queendom. She interviews that she’s still angry and sad. Ryan says that he has to live with himself, so he won’t talk bad about people. Dilana says that she was under the impression this was a clinic and she was supposed to speak her mind. I’m not sure she realizes which side of the clinic she’s supposed to be on. Lukas replies that life is a clinic. He interviews that Dilana got caught saying things she should have kept to herself, and now she has to live with the consequences. Dilana says it will take her a little while to get over this. Storm tries to comfort her. Dilana says she could feel her tears and emotion waiting to explode. She cries out by the pool with Lukas and interviews that everything that happened was going through her head like a hurricane. She felt weak and vulnerable: “My whole world ended.” Wow. Dramatic much? Also, I’m under the impression that she’s feeling sorry for herself, not for the people whom she made nasty comments about it. So I don’t have a lot of sympathy for her. Maybe if she paid more attention to the Golden Rule, she wouldn’t be in this mess. The cameras start closing in on Dilana and she flips out, breaking a glass and going inside. An approaching Magni gets hit with some glass, as he tells Lukas after Dilana leaves. Lukas interviews that Dilana was reckless with the glass; what if a shard had hit him in the eye? Lukas goes inside and tells the others what happened. Ryan heads up to check on Magni, who says he’s fine, though he has a streak of blood on his head and forehead. Outside, Lukas tells Toby that he was trying to talk to Dilana. Speaking of Dilana, she’s upstairs crying and apologizing to Magni. Storm hugs her in bed, and I’m sure some people are very happy after seeing that. Toby winds up cleaning up the glass, telling Ryan that Dilana has probably had one of the sweetest rides of anyone in the competition. Ryan says that some people can’t handle being on top, and Dilana may be self-destructing. Dilana says she feels lonely. She’s worked hard her whole life and can’t screw up now. She has to get out of this, but she’s not sure how to fix it. Back at the Aztec, Dave says that last week was heavy and things in the house seem raw. He wants to put everything to rest so they can move on. He checks on Magni, who assures everyone that his cut is just a flesh wound. Actually, you can’t even see it now. Dave asks Dilana how she feels going into tonight’s performance. She says she feels like she’s going to rock it. No one’s perfect and we all stumble. She fell hard, but she’s back and stronger than before. She loves her fellow singers and won’t do anything to hurt them again. After wasting about 15 minutes on Dilana drama, we get to song selection footage. The singers learn how the votes turned out via TV. Ryan has been given Magni’s previous song, Coldplay’s “Clocks” (with 39% of the vote), which Toby thinks he’ll do well because of the falsetto. Ryan likes getting his assignment from the fans. Lukas gets Nirvana’s “Lithium” with 42% of the votes. He wonders if people want him to show up Dilana, who previously sang the song. 59% of people want Magni to sing “I Alone,” which Ryan did before. A whopping 68% of voters picked Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life” for Storm, despite the fact that we’ve already heard it twice (once from Jill and once from Zayra). Storm says she knows the melody but not the lyrics. Dilana, who will be doing Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” (also performed by Jill) says she’s ready to get on stage and show that she’s back. Storm reads off a fan’s comment that Dilana gives women who love rock someone to look up to. Dilana says she feels a new energy and can’t let her fans down. Interestingly, every singer wound up a wildcard song. Makes sense to me - let’s hear something new. Back at the Aztec, Dave tells the singers that the six of them are the best of the best. Some of them will be comfortable with their songs for tonight and some won’t, but they all need to bring it. We can’t have any train wrecks this week. Lukas is up first with “Lithium,” but since there are only six singers left, first we have to kill some time with an American Idol-like clip package. He says he hopes the fans see him for who he is. When he’s not on stage, he’s just like everyone else. He plays basketball and video games, and he loves beer. He notes that before he came here, he worked at Hooters. “I am everybody else, I just wear more makeup than everybody else,” he says. Heh. However, when he’s on stage, he has to turn it on again. Lukas doesn’t even let Brooke finish talking before he starts encouraging the crowd to cheer for him. The song starts out with just a piano accompaniment, which is soon joined by claps from the audience. Lukas keeps the first verse stripped, then gets to rocking. He sounds pretty good, though pretty much what you’d expect from Lukas. It’s very high energy and fun to watch. I think I’m warming up to Lukas now that he’s stood up to Dilana the way he did. Dave thinks Lukas’ arrangement of a classic, “sacred” Nirvana song was awesome. Tommy is a firm believer in letting music do the talking, and that was talking. His pink cowboy hat is distracting. He says that the second Lukas sang, he was captivated, and he was sure the whole world was. Gilby says this was Lukas’ best performance yet. Jason calls the performance “dynamite,” saying that Lukas sang it right and let it go. He adds that this was a great way to start the show. In Magni’s clip package, he says that the only thing that will save him is a campaign to get fans voting for him, since just the population of Iceland won’t be enough. He tells Australia that he looks better than Toby, and Canada and America that they can do better than Lukas and Ryan. Just because Ryan is American doesn’t mean we have to vote for him. “I learned your language!” he argues. Hee. I’m wondering if Magni’s resemblance to the lead singer of Live affected anyone’s votes. Like Lukas, Magni starts out “I Alone” calmly, then waits until the chorus to tear it up. I’m not surprised that this song fits him really well. He makes it look effortless. Magni is all over the place, including the judges’ platform, which, of course, they love. Dave says he almost wishes Magni had stayed up with the judges because his performance was killer and he wanted to say it to Magni’s face. There’s nothing else he can say to him now; it’ll just come down to a roll of the dice. Tommy says he loves that Magni came up there and wishes he’d gone all the way to the back of the theater. Magni says he thought about it, but he was concerned about the lighting. Gilby tells him he’s always been solid, but tonight he gave an extra something Gilby has been asking for. In his package, Ryan says that in the beginning, he was lost and could’ve been gone at any point. But he hung on and got better and better. Now is the perfect time for him and he’s coming into his own. As long as his true self keeps coming out, he feels like he could win this. Ryan dedicates his version of “Clocks” to the fans. He starts out at the piano, and after a little intro, he proceeds to climb up on top of the piano, sing a couple of bars, and then jump off and head into the audience. This guy is getting fearless. I’m waiting for him to smash another guitar. Ryan sounds pretty good, though not as good as he’s been the past few weeks. He manages to time his moves just right to get back to the piano for a little while, before slithering on top of it for a grand finale. Dave thinks this will be a tough night. Ryan always has a level of intensity, and as a viewer, it’s exciting to know he’s willing to jump up on top of the piano like that. Jason thinks piano and vocals are Ryan’s forte. But when he gets out from behind the piano after we’ve seen his strength, he loses the plot as the front man. Jason glares at some booers. Gilby thinks this was a great performance and notes that Ryan gives us something different every week. There’s nothing better than watching an inspired artist perform. Storm’s package starts out with the revelation that a fan said this should be Super Storm, not Supernova. Storm is worried about doing “Bring Me to Life” because her voices is different from Jill’s and Zayra’s. She’s also never sung this song and thinks it will be hard. But with Toby on background vocals, how can she go wrong? Storm has done the old put-the-song-in-a-low-key trick, but she can hit those low notes, so I can’t fault her for that. She sounds a little shaky starting out, and she screws up the lyrics a little, but she does better as it goes on. There are some pitch problems, but Storm makes up for it with her performance and energy. Dave says that when he heard Storm was doing this song, he was worried because it’s not in her register. But he thinks she pulled it off all right. He gives props to Toby as well, saying that he was awesome and may have stolen a little heat. Gilby says he still remembers Jill’s performance of this song, but he probably won’t remember this performance. Jason says that effort counts a lot in his book, and Storm showed that and pulled it off. Storm adds that she wore a dress. A nice dress, too. Toby’s clip package starts with him saying that he’s the joker in the house. Apparently one of his favorite activities is shoving cake in Ryan’s face; he’s done it on at least two occasions. He adds that he was the first guy to run around naked. He’s always thinking ahead to what kind of fun he can create. However, he remembers to keep the line between joking around and getting the job done. Now that he’s performed with Supernova, he wants this more than ever. He thinks the band needs someone lionhearted who’s also fun. I guess people really liked Toby’s version of “White Wedding” and wanted to hear him do more Idol. Good choice! I have to say that I think this is the performance of the evening. He’s got everything in there - the vocals, the energy, the connection with the audience and band, and some audience participation. It doesn’t hurt that he pulls a few girls up on stage to dance with him. Now that’s a way to get votes! And I must say, the final shot of him is quite hot. Dave was worried about Toby doing this song as well. Toby says he was, too. Dave says he bought it, and especially liked the spontaneity and the crowd interaction. Gilby says this is a great night for Toby. He helped out Storm and took his own song to a new level. Tommy notes the connection between doing “Rebel Yell” and running around naked. “God bless you,” he says. He suggests that Toby bring the girls back to the dressing room. The girls are thrilled but Toby thinks they should get some ID first. Brooke manages to ad lib something funny for once, noting that Toby already has groupies. Guess what Dilana talks about in her clip package? Puppies. No, not really. She talks about how she screwed up but realized that it’s okay to make mistakes. What matters is how you get back. She wants people to know they didn’t do the wrong thing by voting for her, and she wants to use the stage to let out her emotions. Like her mommy issues? How ironic that she’s doing “Mother Mother.” She’s also the latest to strap on a guitar, but she’s making it clear that it’s not hindering her in any way. Dilana sounds great, but I can’t help but feel like she’s trying too hard. Magni’s singing along. That cracks me up for some reason. Dilana ditches the guitar and starts crawling on someone in the house band. Jason’s singing along, too, but it’s not as funny as Magni. Dave says this might be his favorite performance of both seasons. He also can’t think of one lead singer who hasn’t said stupid things to the press. He repeats that we’re all moving on. Tommy tells Dilana to say hello to the King of Mistakes. Dilana says she’s the queen. Tommy tells her that the ultimate thing to remember is that we make mistakes, we learn from them, and we hopefully don’t make them again. It’s just another life lesson. Can we stop with the heartwarming lessons, please? This is a rock show. Gilby says Dilana gave a great performance; there wasn’t a bad part. Jason asks her how it was to blast it out. She says she needed an angry song and this was perfect. She’s gotten everything out and she can’t wait for the next gig. Let the voting begin! After a break, we get the initial bottom three: Storm, Ryan, and Lukas. Wait, what? Lukas? Really? Granted, I’m not sure who’d I’d put there in his place, but still, that’s kind of a surprise. But now that we’re down to just six singers, there’s a thin line between the top three and the bottom three. http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article6397.art&page=1
