August 2 - It’s the End of the World as We Know It
Rock Star: Supernova, August 2 - It’s the End of the World as We Know It by Jenn Brasler -- 08/03/2006 Things that will happen before Zayra (right) gets eliminated from this show: The price of gas falls back below $2. Bill Gates declares bankruptcy. Paris Hilton is considered a respectable member of society. Tommy stops hitting on anyone with breasts. Hell freezes over. Brooke is wearing jeans and the top half of Jennifer Lopez’s infamous low-cut dress. Eck. She thanks the millions of people who voted. You’re welcome. Actually, I hope Josh and Toby will be thanking me. Hi, Supernova. Hi, Dave. I wonder if he’ll get to play with a singer next week. That’d be cool. Last night was “off the hook,” according to Brooke. We see Magni’s mansion footage again, as well as Patrice’s decision to do “Higher Ground” and her subsequent fight with Ryan. Then we see Patrice’s (and Tommy’s) performance, followed by Magni singing about home in “Clocks.” Dilana sang “Can’t Get Enough” right in front of the judges but Toby took “Pennyroyal Tea” to the audience. Josh was funky (and beatboxy) again with “Santeria” and Zayra… um… I don’t know what that was. I just don’t want it near me. Dana rocked “Baba O’Riley,” assuring Gilby that she can be a rebel and announcing that she was getting a tattoo. Storm went calm with “Changes” and Ryan gave his best performance ever with “Losing My Religion.” However, Jill was criticized for sucking on “Don’t You Forget About Me” and Lukas forgot the words to “Celebrity Skin” and got caught. In tonight’s mansion footage Lukas is sad. At dinner Magni toasts to “the best show so far.” He wonders how they’ll top it next week and teases that Lukas will remember his words. Lukas interviews that he wasn’t himself but everyone has bad nights. Later, he talks with Ryan out by the pool and Ryan sympathizes, since he had bad nights the first three weeks of the competition. He points out that every other time Lukas has performed, he brought everything. This was the first time he was awkward. He says Lukas lost some swagger and edge. Lukas thinks he deserves to be in the bottom three, though he hopes he won’t be. I don’t agree, but I do admire him for not making excuses or for trying to argue that he was better than he was. That’s pretty humble of him. Lukas grumbles that on the one song that sounds like Supernova, he had to screw up. Back in the Aztec, Dave tells Lukas that he’s killing in this competition. He has it locked up, basically, so what happened? Lukas says he’s only human and it was just his turn to screw up. He’ll take it like a man. Everyone will do it and he’s sure it won’t happen again. If Lukas is in the bottom three, which he thinks should happen, he knows he’s good enough to get out of it. Dave likes Lukas’ deflated hair. Dave turns to Dana, asking if she followed up on her announcement that she would get a tattoo. She did! “Welcome to the ink party,” she says. She shows off the treble clef on her hip, though Dave thinks she said “trouble.” Dana says it’s both and adds that she’s planning to get a bass clef on the other hip. Dave says she should get it on the back side. Dana takes the bait and says, “‘Cause that’s where low notes come from.” They’re corrupting her! Gilby asks Ryan why everyone didn’t fight for the chance to play with Tommy. Ryan says that’s a good question. He think it’s mostly because it’s been equally exciting for the singers to play with everyone in Supernova. They didn’t want to lose focus and choose a song because of that. However, after seeing Patrice’s performance, he knows that it’s a shot of steroids to whoever winds up playing with someone from Supernova. He thinks Patrice did great and they’re all a little envious of her. However, Ryan hopes to play with Supernova later. Dave asks how Patrice felt getting “Higher Ground.” She says it felt amazing. She only regrets not growing eyes in the back of her head to see Tommy while they were playing together. Heh. Dave says it was a risk for her and he wonders if it’ll pay off. Patrice agrees, adding that every song selection is risky; you have to be on top of it. Dave says they’re finally getting a sense of what the singers will look like in front of Supernova. Patrice says that if you can’t pull it off, you shouldn’t be there. Tommy says that he knows how hard it is for Magni to be away from his family, especially when there are “little monkeys” involved. He’s wondering how Magni will handle things if he wins. “We’re moving to Iceland, right?” Magni asks. Hee. Gilby tells him they’ll play in Iceland and the States. Magni points out that Iceland is right between Europe and the U.S. He says it’ll work - “it always works.” Jason says that last night was great and Supernova saw some unpredictable things. He asks the singers to raise their hands if they think they should have the encore. Storm and Dana raise their hands and Jill tries to raise a modest Ryan’s for him. Delusional Zayra raises her hand. Jason says everyone’s hand should be up, but it’s their show, so they get to decide. And it’s Ryan. I’m not surprised, and I’m very happy about that choice. Except there’s no piano, so we have to wait until after the commercials to hear him. I guess it would have ruined the suspense if the piano had already been out there. When we return, Brooke tells us about Windows Live Spaces, where you can create a space for a singer, Supernova, or Brooke. Whatever. Then Ryan performs. It’s just as good as last night and the audience loves it again. Bottom three time. Brooke calls everyone who landed in the bottom three at some point last night: Toby, Jill (who’s all smiles), Dana (that’s surprising), Zayra (who knew it), and Patrice. “What?” Storm and I exclaim. Everyone else is safe. Yay, Josh! Dave is surprised to see Toby and surprised not to see Lukas. Brooke gets to the official bottom three, starting with… Jill. Of course. I don’t think she’s surprised. We get her P&CCP. Gilby - here we go again. Thinks she’s amazing, but the voters don’t seem to agree. She’ll try to win them over with Heart’s “Alone.” She’s totally doing that because Gilby talked about Heart last week, isn’t she? To be honest, it sounds very American Idol. Jill sounds okay when she starts but she has problems with the higher notes. She should have done something more to try to save herself. Supernova gives her a standing ovation anyway. Brooke announces that a couple of singers decided to skip out on house band practice. Ooh, bad idea. Dana and Toby ‘fess up. Oh, Toby. Why? Brooke informs Dana that she’s the second rocker in the bottom three. We see Dana’s P&CCP. I’m really surprised she’s in the bottom three; I thought she was awesome. Jason calls Dana out for missing the practice. She says she was at a spa. Jason teases that that’s “so rock and roll singer.” Dave says she should win by default. Dana says she didn’t want them to wait on her. Jason thinks that was considerate of her and he hopes it doesn’t come back to haunt her. Dana’s survival song will be the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” because it’s a classic, just like “Baba O’Riley.” Great choice; it’s perfect for her voice. She shows off her rock abilities as well as her voice. She’s also getting the rock swagger down, which is nice to see. I just realized that Zayra is wearing a long skirt with a bandanna on her chest. Ew. The final singer in the bottom three is… not Toby, though he falls for Brooke’s fake-out. Storm and Magni beat on him when he sits down. Patrice puts her arm around Zayra. As if that weren’t bad enough, Patrice is the third singer in the bottom three. WHAT? It’s official. Satan is somehow involved in this. I’m too despondent to pay attention to Patrice’s P&CCP. There’s no way Zayra deserves to stay over Patrice. Are the rumors of a Save Zayra faction true? That’s sad. Tommy is shocked, too. Patrice says that if people aren’t getting it, she wants them to know that she’s serious about this. Her survival song is Jeff Buckley’s “Eternal Life.” Another good song choice for her. Like Dana, she shows off her voice and her rock skills at the same time. This is the fun part of the bottom three performances - we get to see what songs these singers really like. The band deliberates. Gilby tells the survivors that they have a new assignment - they’ll get a new Supernova track to write the lyrics and melody to. That’s a great idea. Then he starts in on Jill, telling her she’s made some horrible creative choices. However, she saved herself tonight, so she gets to stay. You mean it’s between Patrice and Dana now? What planet have I ended up on? Gilby tells Dana that she’s developing well, but they’re not sure about her. Patrice is a good singer and performer, but she’s in the bottom three even after having Tommy behind her. The Hatchet Man has a different horned sweatshirt this week. How many of those does he have? He says he has to keep the band’s best interests in the forefront. Dana has come far but has a lot further to go. This means she’s out. Noooooo! That’s not rock and roll at all! Zayra sucks! Get rid of her! Dave tells Dana that it’s been a joy to watch her and he’s sure she’ll do well in the future. She assures him that she doesn’t regret getting her tattoo. Dana says that this has been the best adventure she’s ever experienced and she never thought she’d get to meet the band. She’s had a lot of firsts on the show and made some great friends. She has a lot of room to grow and still wants this a lot. She’s very grateful to have been here. Jason tells her that she brings a positive, fun energy to the competition and house, and he’s sure that will be missed. He thinks she’s going to go a long way. Dana replies that she’ll see him at the top. Jason tells the other singers that what they’re looking at now is how they handle all of the demands put on them in this new life. Dana is the youngest there but she’s handling everything very maturely. She curtsies. I’m going to miss her! She had the best quotes. Dana goes to say goodbye to the other singers, hugging Ryan first (he’s closest), then Toby and Zayra the cockroach. I think Zayra can kill with her touch, or at least cause those she touches to lose. Hands off, la cucaracha! Post-show comments: Jill says she’s been under a lot of pressure and the comments she’s gotten are difficult. She wants to prove that she’s worthy and can handle being in the band. Patrice says it’s tough to be in the bottom three two weeks in a row. She’s been in this business since she was a teen and she wants to do better, whatever it takes. She’s never going to stop. Jill says that Dana sweet and talented. Whatever she does, she’ll be good. http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article9802.art&page=1
