August 16 - Shiny Happy People
Rock Star: Supernova, August 16 - Shiny Happy People by Jenn Brasler -- 08/16/2006 Patrice keeps landing in the bottom three and fighting her way back into the competition. Will she do the same this week, or will she finally be on her way home? And what happens tonight to make many people very, very happy? Only a couple of people gave me band name suggestions, so I’ll wait until next week to post the list and give everyone a chance to send them in. Or, you know, another week for people to keep thinking I’m crazy. Brooke tells us that there’s a huge surprise in store for us. I hope it’s a good surprise. Hi, singers. Hi, Supernova. Hi, Dave. We get a recap of song selection with Zayra getting the original song and Toby stripping to get a song with Gilby. Last night Gilby made sure Toby knew how much he appreciated it. Toby proved himself with “Solsbury Hill,” accompanied by Gilby. Zayra sang her original song “Lluvia de Mar” (and thanks to the reader who directed me to the impossible-to-find page containing the English lyrics). Magni did well with “Starman.” Ryan allegedly rocked “In the Air Tonight,” but I beg to differ. Dilana really did rock “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Lukas was criticized for his constricting on “Hero” and Patrice was boring with “Message in a Bottle.” I thought Storm was great on “I Will Survive,” but apparently I was the only one who felt that way. In tonight’s mansion footage, Storm laments at dinner how tough last night was for her. Her song was hard and the judges really let her have it. Later, some of the guys discuss Storm and Ryan wonders if she has enough fans to keep her out of the bottom three. Worry about yourself, Mr. Paint it Black. Lukas is sure she’ll be in the bottom. He reminds us that there were two eliminations last week. Don’t rub it in, Lukas! Elsewhere, Storm, Patrice, and Dilana watch Storm’s performance on a phone. Storm has no problem with it. If Supernova didn’t like it, she can’t take it personally. She knows she’s good enough, but it’s up to Supernova, not her. Back at the Aztec, Dave addresses Storm’s “controversial” performance. I don’t think I would call it controversial. Dave says the audience loved it but the judges didn’t. He stands by what he said. He’s wondering where Storm’s head is. She says that she gave it 1,000 percent. As with every song they can pick, it may not be her favorite, but it’s someone’s, which is why it’s there. She did the best she could with the time materials she had. Dave thinks this is a good answer. He mentions the fact that Cake does a version of the song, though ironically, and he didn’t get a sense of irony from Storm’s performance. She sang well, and he also feels that out of all the remaining eight singers, Storm is the one who can take the kind of criticism she got, which is why he feels solid and secure giving it to her. I bet Dilana would be able to take it, too, though I doubt we’ll ever hear her criticized. Dave tells Toby that people obviously like to see him naked. Well, yeah. Toby jokes that he’s sure his father is impressed. Dave says he was clearly happy to strip for the chance to play with Gilby. Toby notes that it’s been getting a little boring around the mansion, so that made it more exciting. Dave wonders what he’ll do next week to top this. Toby announces that he’s prepared to run down Melrose Avenue naked to get a song. Quick, someone book me a flight to California! Jason tells us that usually this is encore time, but this week they’re changing it up: Supernova has an announcement. Gilby says this has been a great season so far, and two things are clear: there’s a lot of talent here, and Supernova has been sitting around too long. They think it’s time for them to get up on stage and play. Tommy makes it clear that they’re not declaring a winner at this point, but if they could test someone out with the band, who would that be? A lot of people in the audience call out Dilana’s name. Lukas is so jealous. Tommy tells us that the singers were given an assignment, and it’s time for more footage. Last week the singers were given a new Supernova track to learn. The next day, they go to a studio to meet up with the band. Gilby tells them that each week from now on, one singer will sing an original track with Supernova. Everyone “auditions” for the first chance. Patrice goes first and sounds pretty good. Storm is next and is even better. Dilana is great, of course. Ryan is… meh. Nothing special. Gilby interviews that it’s cool to hear their touches on the song. Now Supernova needs to concentrate on whose voice is right for the song. Toby sings so deep that I can barely hear him. Zayra is… Zayra. Magni is pretty good. Lukas… well, he’s growling, as usual. I’m liking the song, at least. Gilby says this was a risky move. It’ll be the band’s first time playing on a stage and the first time people see them perform. It’s all about who’s right for this song this week. Back at the Aztec, Gilby repeats that the contest is far from over. He notes that some people think a woman can’t front the band (I’m not exactly sure who’s been saying that), but Supernova disagrees. Someone did something extra special, so she gets to do the song this week. Guess who? It’s Dilana, of course. She’s great, singing and performing well and trying to get the audience into it. I can definitely hear her singing with this band. She gets some dancing help from some random girls. Afterwards, Dave praises them all for a great performance. Jason says that Dilana had great chemistry with the band. He reiterates that the contest still hasn’t been decided. Tommy liked the hot dancing girls. Of course. Brooke tells us that if we participate in the Windows Live Space contest (mentioned a week or two ago), in two weeks Supernova will give someone a trip for two to the finale. Whatever, it’s encore time. Jason says that they changed it up with a stripped-down show last night and everyone adapted well. Someone gave a “super-dynamic” performance and gets the encore. It’s Ryan. Well, I guess since Dilana got to sing with the band, this makes sense. To them, it makes sense. I don’t want it. I’m just not a Ryan fan. How many of his performances have I liked? Two? That’s not good. Brooke gives us the early bottom three: Zayra, Patrice, and Toby. Storm is shocked by that. Of course, she got to see him naked without pixelation. The other singers who landed in the bottom three were Magni and Storm. “Yes!” Storm shouts. Heh. Dave is a little surprised by Magni, as am I. Dilana gets the audience to cheer for him. Dave is also surprised by Storm, since she sang great despite how he felt about her performance. After some commercials, we get down to business. The first singer in the bottom three is… Zayra. Thank you, non-voters. I appreciate your good works. Zayra is singing “Razor Blade” by Blue October. Never heard of it. Storm has a rose in her mouth for some reason. Maybe she’s going to tango! The song isn’t too bad, but Zayra is typical Zayra. What do I say? She goes a little Jill on it, getting too into it and oversinging. But she’s definitely fighting for survival. The second singer in the bottom three is… Patrice. Well, of course. Tommy calls her “sweetie” and asks what she’s going to sing. She says that she originally planned to sing a ballad, but she picked a rock song instead, Hole’s “Celebrity Skin.” Terrific choice. Also, take that, Lukas! Her key is too low for her and she doesn’t sing the regular melody part of the time, but her performance is great. She gets in time with the audience, the house band, the other singers, and Supernova. It’s the first time in a long time (or possibly ever) that I feel compelled by Patrice. If she can do this every week, she’ll stick around at least a couple more weeks, I think. Brooke notes that the three singers left standing - Magni, Storm, and Toby - have never been in the bottom three before. The unlucky singer is… Magni. Storm seems confused, but she and Toby are safe. Jason asks for Magni’s song and reason for singing it. Magni is doing “Creep” by Radiohead. What is this, Sing Lukas’ Songs Night? It’s the anthem for Magni’s generation - their “Satisfaction.” Okay, then. Magni sings it better than Lukas (though I might be biased by my lack of like for Lukas). He gets a head-rub from Magni. No! Didn’t I tell you that whatever she touches gets destroyed? Run away! Run away! Magni doesn’t listen. He lies down on the stage instead. Ewww, dirty. Now he’s sitting down, which, remember, Gilby hates. Oh, Magni. Really testing the limits tonight, especially with Lukas imitations. This time the line “I don’t belong here” works much better - Magni really didn’t deserve to be in the bottom three tonight. Gilby starts off by addressing Zayra. He says one of the band’s favorite four-letter works is “risk.” Zayra has taken two risks recently - doing her original song last night and singing a little-known song tonight. Patrice keeps landing in the bottom three, so the band has to consider that. Magni was great last night and tonight. He’s “so far from going home,” so he’s safe. Good choice. It’s the Hatchet Man/Tommyhawk’s turn. Tommy reminds us that there are two singers on stage and someone has to go. Tommy Lee, AKA Captain Obvious. Patrice, we believe you have potential. Zayra, you… not so much. Get out. And there was much rejoicing. Yay! The Save Zayra faction has been toppled! Victory! The world is back in order. Oh, Storm, don’t be sad. It’s a happy day! Dave claims to be sorry to see Zayra go. She gave some of the most compelling performances of both seasons. Yeah, they compelled me to turn off the show. Dave thinks Zayra has star power and will do fine. Zayra says that this has been the craziest roller coaster she’s ever been on. It’s been amazing and all of the singers have discovered the real people inside them. She thanks the band for doing this and she’s proud to be a part of it. No one will believe she’s been here so long, including her. She appreciates everything and is sad that she’ll have to miss the party, but her heart will be with everyone still left. Jason says he’s one of Zayra’s biggest fans and thanks her for sharing. Yes, Show and Tell is over. Now go home. Zayra says ‘bye to the world and promises (threatens) to see us soon. Um, thanks, but no thanks. She hugs Ryan and Magni. Whatever. She’s gone! Yay! There’s more voting to be done - in the same ways we vote each week, we can vote for songs we want certain singers to perform. For instance, you can vote for Dilana to sing “Lithium,” “Ring of Fire,” Time After Time,” or a wildcard song, “Mother Mother.” Next week’s performance show will be at 10 p.m. EST instead of 9 p.m., so don’t forget or you’ll wind up watching Big Brother: All Stars instead. Post-show comments: Patrice says that she’s admired Zayra’s creativity and modern flare. She’ll miss her. As for herself, if she’d gone home tonight, we would have been satisfied. Since she got to stay, she knows she did well. Magni says that being in the bottom three sucked. He’s proud rather than nervous to have all of Iceland behind him; it makes him want to do better. http://www.realitynewsonline.com/cgi-bin/ae.pl?mode=4&article=article9828.art&page=1

Re: Zayra
With the departure of Zayra, the show got a whole lot less interesting to me. But at least Storm is still part of the show. And shame on the judges for slamming her performance this week. She was one of the better performers this week. She's so much more interesting that boring ol' Dilana. Stupid, stupid Dilana.
