Attention Pika!! Florida's Governor's Race Debate Just saw that, at 6 PM Central Time, that MSNBC will be carrying the Florida Governor's Race Debate and it will be moderated by Hardball's Chris Matthews.
I tape Hardball every day (since I'm at work when it airs) so I'll get to watch this. It will be interesting to compare views with a real Floridian. I know nothing about either of the candidates so this should be an interesting experience for me.
When I do watch it (may be a couple of days), I post my impressions here and hope you do the same, Pika!!

I don't care about politics. I don't even bother voting anymore. *hides from foaming political activists throwing tomatoes because I don't vote*

Pfftt. I just don't feel like my vote matters and I don't care about (or really even understand) most political issues. I might as well flip a coin to choose who to vote for but that's not going to give us the best candidate.
Is it better to vote just for the sake of voting or just not to vote at all? America can't even vote for a decent singer on American Idol, for cripe's sake!! I think people vote because one candidate looks cuter than the other one or one candidate's name is harder to spell and pronounce so they just go ahead and vote for the other one. I'm beyond disillusioned by our voting system and see no need to participate in it.
Heck, I've worked with people who only vote so they can take time off from work to go vote.

Then you can start a new trend of being a good citizen who casts an educated vote.
It's Sunday, so this was way more than a couple of days before I got to see your Governor candidates debate and I have one question for you, Pika, about something I haven't even read. Do you know about this?
Chris Matthews, the debate moderator, mentions a horrific case recently in Florida where a 9 year old girl was buried alive in a hefty bag. No details, not even if she died or not, which I assume happened.
Of your candidates, I happened to like the Reform candidate, Max Linn best even though he has no chance of winning. He said he was a former Republican too.
I liked Jim Davis, the Democrat but he kept mentioning some school paperwork (??) or school program (??) which sounded like "Ep-Cot or "F-Cat". I'm not familiar with that at all.
The Republican candidate, Charlie Crist, is apparently your state's current District Attorney. His tan looks fake but it went good with his white hair (but I'm not one who votes on looks!!!!!!) and I was impressed with both him and Jim Davis's views on gay civil unions --- very progressive. There seem to be big differences between these two about how Florida should deal with the insurance companies and property taxes, two subjects that should interest you as a Floridian living in hurricane country.
Anyway, I enjoyed the debate very much.

The FCAT is our current school exam. From what I've heard of it, kids have to pass the FCAT each year or they won't pass on to the next grade, even if they're not failing their classes. As you can imagine, a lot of parents and students complain about it. How would you like it if your kid got all A's and B's in classes but got held back because they failed the FCAT?

Charlie Crist was my mom's former boss when she worked in the Attorney General's office. I don't know much about him. My mom complained about her immediate supervisor (Joslyn) but she never had a bad word to say about any of the attorney general's that have been in office while she worked there. Bob Butterworth was AG before Charlie Crist.

I looked up some information for you, Grimme.
Here's a site about the FCAT: http://www.firn.edu/doe/sas/fcat.htm
There's an article about Jessica Lunsford, the girl buried in the garbage bag, at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Lunsford

Thanks, Pika. Wikipedia is even more extensive than I thought.
This must be the case that Chris Matthews was referring to but he made it sound like it was fairly recent so I'm a little puzzled since this happened in early 2005.
The article does mention that a court said the alleged killer's confession is inadmissible because police didn't follow all procedure, and this was dated June 30, 2006, but I didn't get that that was what Matthews was referring to.
