Are you afraid of the dark?
When I was little, I was afraid of the dark and slept with a nightlight on. When I got to be in my teens, I started working on my fear of the dark until I didn't need a nightlight anymore. Now I can't stand having any light in the bedroom when I'm trying to sleep. Even the light from tv's, vcr's, or clocks is annoying. My friend, Kathy, likes to have a nightlight so if she has to get up during the night she can find her way around. Do you like to have some light in the bedroom or do you prefer no light?

I don't recall ever being afraid of the dark when I was kid but whenever my sister and I spent the night at my grandparent's house, they always had a nightlight for us in the hall and bathroom. But I'm like you, Pika, I can't stand having any kind of light in the bedroom. The TV stand with the TV, cablebox, VCR and PS2 on it is at the foot of the bed and the display from the cablebox is so damn bright, I have to put something over it when I go to bed. The little red light from the PS2 can get annoying at times, too! We actually used to have a nightlight in the hall and bathrooms but never replaced them when the bulbs blew.

I'm like you guys, like it very, very dark to sleep. I've never been afraid of the dark. My 8 year old is afraid of the dark. I don't know where she got it from, but she has 3 lamp/night lights that she keeps on. I have to keep a nightlight on in the living room and bathroom, in case she has to get up in the middle of the night.

My last apartment had the bedroom window facing out to the parking lot so there was light flooding in from the security lights outside and the nearby convenience store and McDonald's. I had to put a quilt over the window to block out the light so I could sleep. I was hoping when I moved to the condominium that I'd be able to take down the window covering in the bedroom but now my bedroom window is facing out on a golf course and they have lights out there so I had to put the quilt back up. I just remembered something else, on a similar vein. I wake up easily so I don't like any noise when I'm sleeping. My grandma has a clock in the guest bedroom that ticks really loud so when I visit her, I have to unplug the clock during my visit. I'll wake up if I hear water dripping and every time the air conditioner switches on and off. Sometimes I wish I was a heavier sleeper so that these little noises wouldn't wake me up so easily! I'll even wake up sometimes because Twinkle is purring in her sleep.

Nope, not afraid of the dark. But I used to be terrified of what lived under the stairs     and in the basement drain......and this was all before I was allowed to watch horror movies

That's where I'm completely opposite, Pika. I have to have noise to sleep. I have to have my fan on, or music or something. I love to fall asleep during thunderstorms and once I'm asleep, it takes either shaking me or my alarm clock to wake me up! The only time I've ever been a light sleeper was when Olivia was a baby and I was scared to death of sids. I had the baby monitor right by my bed and would wake up often to listen to her breathing.

OM, I'm like that too. I always turn my fan on and fall asleep with the tv (hubby watches it in bed). When I went away for a meeting I had to turn the tv on in the hotel room so I could fall asleep. But I can not fall asleep or read when there is music playing. Wierd I know  . I can read and fall asleep with the tv though.

I don't think I was exactly "scared of the dark" when I was little. I was more terrified that there was someone after me. I hated where my room was(it's actually where the computer is now) because if someone did break in they would see my room first. I was so scared of the window by the head of bed. I always imagined someone being out there behind the bush that was right in front of it. I eventually slept on my parent's floor because I was so scared, it didn't help much though. I remember just laying there, staring at the door, waiting for someone to come in. So I was never really scared of the dark exactly. When I moved into my brother's old room, everything was much better and I had a t.v., so I fell asleep to that everynight. Now, it depends on how tired I am and if I want to fall asleep. I'll turn on my t.v. if I don't need to fall asleep right away or I just want to listen to something that's on. If I'm really tired, or really awake and need to fall asleep soon, then I don't turn it on. I can't fall asleep to music because I start singing along with it in my head. I can, however, read while music is on. I do that on the bus all the time when we go somewhere for a game. I'll put my headphones on and I'll read a book. There was one night when I was scared of the dark though. You all know the story of Bloody Mary right(if you don't, I'll find you a link)? Well, I didn't exactly say it out loud(I have yet to do that), but I said it in my head while staring at a mirror. I was soooo scared that night to fall asleep. I even had my t.v. on, but I was still petrified. Took me forever. Because of my fear as a child, I believe I was murdered as a little kid in a past life. I've always told people that, but I'm probably wrong. :? Sorry--I'm sure you didn't expect a book. lol.

I can't fall asleep to music because I start singing along with it in my head. I do that, too. I read all the time with the tv on and I can study no problem with music or the tv on. I can't fall asleep with the tv on, though, because I'll want to stay up and watch. I didn't do a very good job naming this thread but I couldn't think of a good title. I mostly wanted to talk about sleep habits, not so much fear of the dark.

I think I was when I was little. I didnt like to go outside after dark because I just knew...I KNEW...bigfoot was waiting right around the corner of the house. If I went off the front porch he would get me. I KNEW he was there too..I did. Now...I love the dark. Turn out the lights and shut off the sun.

I fall asleep watching TV (usually a movie) when I'm that tired or I doze a bit then wake up, so yep, I can fall asleep with the TV on and with music playing, too. The AC in the bedroom is very loud and I manage to fall asleep with it on, so I wouldn't consider myself a light sleeper. Sebastian purrs very loud and sleeps next to me. One night hubby kicked him out of the room because he said Sebastian was purring so loud, he couldn't fall asleep! :?

When I was real little (less than 4 years old), I saw a gorilla standing by my bedroom door every night and it made me cry. I was afraid of the dark. That fear is long gone. In order to sleep now I have to have it totally dark - like some of you, I can't even stand the lights from a cable box or radio to be shining. I cover them up. But I also can't stand any noise at all. I've never, ever had a fan in my bedroom because the whirring keeps me awake. Same for a widow air conditioner. I even had to keep throwing away humidifiers because the hissing kept me awake - until I found one that was quiet. But here's the odd thing. If I lay down on the couch rather than sitting up, I'll almost immediately fall asleep - with the television blaring away. Doesn't make sense.

I'm not afraid of the dark, but I am afraid of what's lurking in the dark..... I don't have a night light and I fall asleep wherever however.. it doesn't matter as long as I get to sleep. I listen to the sleep button while going to bed.. and the fan is whirling away too... I don't like the absolute quiet, it freaks me out and I hear the foresaid "lurkers".

I was quite afraid of the dark as a child. But I began to grow fond of the dark as a teen. After spending several years working graveyard shift I love the dark...it is my friend. My room is dark and though I CAN sleep with a light on, I much prefer the darkness. And I need noise to sleep really peacefully. I run the ceiling fan, some quiet music, or even the tv quietly. I can sleep in quiet...but the soft noises are soothing and help me sleep better it seems. While I am not afraid of the dark....I am afraid of the Darstar!
