An "Insider" Look at Episode 10
An "Insider" Look at Survivor: Fiji, Episode 10 - “If You Don't Feel Paranoid Playing Survivor, You're Not Sane” by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 04/23/2007 This week the tribemates scrambled to deal with both immunity idols and shifting alliances. Dreamz spilled the beans on the Horsemen's idol and committed – at least for now – to the other side. And Edgardo was sideswiped right out of the game. How does Edgardo feel about his sudden ouster? Who tells Cassandra he's a “hell of a lot of fun” when he's drunk to get her to take him on the yacht? And just how much weight did Edgardo lose in his 27 days on the island? Find out inside! Edgardo's Final Words Edgardo starts out by saying he's disappointed that Dreamz messed him up with the vote. He was hoping his plan to get Cassandra out would work. He tells the folks who voted him off, best of luck. He says a couple of folks deserve the million, and a couple don't. He wishes Earl and Boo the best of luck. He says that he hopes Yau-Man and Cassandra get voted off next because he doesn't like them very much. Edgardo says he learned patience from this experience. It's an extreme situation and atmosphere. Being patient and able to cope with others will help him out in the future. Edgardo tried to play the idol the right way. It was an all or nothing plan and they had a 50-50 shot. It just didn't work out for them. I wonder what Edgardo's issue is with Yau-Man and Cassandra. It's obviously not just that they're on another side, as he's cool with Earl. Hmmmm... Edgardo, The Day After Edgardo says there are a lot of similarities between real life and Survivor. The game is like a compressed version of real life. You have highs and lows, but in life those highs and lows can take years, but on Survivor everything happens very quickly. An hour can change everything. Edgardo notes that people got desperate at the end, and so did he. He thinks he could have talked to some folks and told them to be more patient. He says it was 50-50 if he'd be the one voted out with the immunity idol issue. He says, “I was going for the Hail Mary” and it didn't work out. The Hail Mary only works one in a hundred times and he wasn't lucky. I'll note here that Edgardo says in the same breath that it was 50-50 and that there was only a 1 in a 100 chance he could make it. These two sentiments don't really go together. He says that biting his tongue was the hardest thing. Edgardo says that a lot of folks here had no idea how to play the game and played dumb. He thinks they should all go back home and just watch TV, because they weren't here to win. But he couldn't say that or he would have been voted out like Rocky. Rocky's behavior was a prime example of what not to do. People get pissed when you yell at them or are brutally honest. Edgardo found himself getting paranoid and stressed at camp. When that happened, he tried to think about his family. After he was voted out, he spent a few hours obsessing over what he could have done differently. This game can really mess your head up. Paranoia plays a big part in this game. “If you don't feel paranoid playing Survivor, you're not sane.” You get dropped on an island with a bunch of other people and you need some of them to go far in the game. But, at the end of the day, those people are going to backstab you. In real life, that happens too, but it can take years. In Survivor, it takes five minutes. Once the tribes merge, people start to act differently. They see how close they are to the million and all they care about is getting further in the game. Edgardo got along well with people in the game, but physically he couldn't take it. He lost 23 pound in 27 days. It's really hot and you don't have food. You don't have energy to go fish. It's really hard out there. For people who watch the show, Edgardo says the multiply what they see by 1,000 and it's still harder than that. He would do the game again, though, because doing the challenges and meeting different personalities and good people is worth it. But he would have to give it a lot of thought, before he said yes. Edgardo's looking forward to seeing people from the perspective of a juror. He thinks that might change his opinion on some folks. There are some people he wants to make it and some he really doesn't. He hopes that he won't have to choose between two people he really doesn't like at the end because that would make his decision really difficult. It's interesting how Edgardo, in these interviews, talks as if he was the only horseman controlling strategy. Maybe that was true, but I'll be curious to see Alex's take on it. Reward Challenge: Get Smashed This is the challenge we saw on the show. We learned that Dreamz is a stinky boy. We also learned that Cassandra obviously knows her tribemates well, answering every question correctly. Whether it's a smart move to win this kind of challenge is another question, however Cassandra wisely chose to bring Dreamz and Boo along on the reward with her and her ally Yau-Man, using the time on the yacht to solidify those two votes. Choosing Mookie to send to Exile Island seems like a bad choice, though, since he was still somewhat of a possible swing vote. Alex or Edgardo would seem a smarter choice. The Pitch This clip takes place right before Cassandra has to pick who goes on the yacht with her. Edgardo suggests that she sit away from the others while they take turns, one by one, going and pleading their case to her about why they should go on the reward. Cassandra says she's down with that. She then interviews that she's going to maximize her opportunity by taking key people with her. Dreamz pleads with Cassandra that he's “so hungry!” Edgardo says that he's got a nice smile and he's really, really skinny and needs food. He promises he won't vote for Cassandra any more if she takes him – or at least will tell her beforehand how he's voting. Yao Man councils Cassandra to pick strategically. Stacy just says she's glad Cassandra won and that she takes the time to get to know everyone. She's the most deserving. Stacy would like to get to know Cassandra better on the boat – after all, they're the last two girls. Cassandra interviews that she has to go with what's best for her in the game. Alex then pleads his case to her. He asks her to take into account who hasn't eaten in the longest time – him and Dreamz. They're both starving. He also says that he realized today that he's more alienated then he thought with the group – and he knows she was once that way too. He also says he's a “hell of a lot of fun” when he's drunk. Earl jokes around with Cassandra then quickly whispers that Boo is a swing vote and she should take Boo, Dreamz, and Earl. Boo says that he's tried to take care of Cassandra from the start. He says to take him if she wants, but he'll understand if she doesn't. Cassandra interviews that everyone pleaded pretty seriously, and she needs to think carefully about who she'll take. Immunity Challenge: Chimney Sweep This is the challenge we saw on the show. Yau-Man wins the challenge, jumping spryly down at the end as if he got to stand on a giant plank the whole time. Meanwhile, all of the other contestants hobble miserably off to the bench after falling off the tiny footholds. Heh. Tribal Council Tribal council is a fun one this week. Watching the Horsemen's glee turn to concern and then horror was delightful. But what did everyone have to say as they voted? Alex votes for Cassandra. “Nothing personal, Cassandra. For me, it's best if you go.” Dreamz votes for Mookie. “A strategic move. Let's still be friends.” Why is it strategic to vote with neither alliance? Boo votes for Edgardo. “Ed, I'm sorry. It was a last minute switch. I got a couple of blondes and I'll hook you up if you'll forgive me.” Cassandra votes for Edgardo. “I've enjoyed you during the game.” Edgardo votes for Cassandra. “ Let's see if this works.” Yau-Man votes for Edgardo. “It wasn't really your time yet, but your boss has the immunity idol so you have to go first. Sorry.” Earl votes for Edgardo in careful, large, neat print. “Nothing personal, just business. Looking forward to hanging out with you later.” Mookie votes for Cassandra. “It's just called revenge.” Stacy votes for Edgardo. “In order for me to stay in this game I had to go with the majority this time.” Stacy also fakes writing a longer name down, probably to keep the Horsemen thinking she was voting for Cassandra. Heh.
