An Interview with Kevin & Drew
“Don't Ever Go To Ecuador… At Least Don’t Go High Up!”: An Interview with The Amazing Race's Kevin & Drew by Teeuwynn Woodruff -- 02/28/2007 The Amazing Race: All-Stars’ Kevin & Drew talk to RealityNewsOnline’s reporter about the race, the other racers, and their lives. Which guy's wife is having triplets? And just what do they think about the contestants from the most recent series? Hint: This is Kevin & Drew, so they don’t hold back! Read on to find out! RealityNewsOnline: Hi Guys! I loved you from the very first episode of the very first Amazing Race! Kevin & Drew: Thanks! RNO: What's with the New York teams leaving so early this season? Drew: I don't know. We hope it doesn't cast a shadow on our other friends. RNO: You guys have this great on-screen rapport. You seem to have a great relationship. Is that true in your real lives? Kevin & Drew: Yeah, absolutely! RNO: How often do you guys get to see each other these days? Kevin: Very infrequently. We're both married now, so our days of single carousing have passed. Drew: Kevin moved. Kevin: I moved from where I grew up. My wife and I bought a home in a little further away in New Jersey. So, we don't get to see one another that often. We talk all the time and e-mail. Drew: The usual BS. RNO: Do you think racing again brought you guys closer? Kevin & Drew: Nah! Kevin: If anything it made me want to kill him more! But it was all good. RNO: As you said, you're both married now. How did your wives feel about you doing the race again? Kevin & Drew: They were both very supportive. They were all for it. Kevin: My wife, well we had some great news in my family. We're expecting triplets! RNO: Wow! Kevin: And right around when we were leaving was the time we'd find out if we were pregnant. It wasn't until after I got a chance to talk to her that we found out that triplets were on the way. But even through all of that, she was very supportive and told me I'd be a fool not to do it. I'd regret it the rest of my life. RNO: It sounds like you have a great wife. What month are the triplets due? Kevin: They're due in June. Pretty exciting! RNO: The Amazing Race may have prepared you for what you're going to go through with the triplets! Drew: I don't think anything's going to prepare him. RNO: Drew, did the injury you sustained in the first leg of the race hurt you in the next leg? Drew: Oh yeah, it did. My shoulder still hurts to this day sometimes. Plus the altitude sickness, which is a horrible thing to get – don't ever go to Ecuador, trust me. At least, don't go high up! RNO: So that affected you into the next leg? Drew: Oh yeah! I had to wake up from the sickness. We left from right where I was sick, throwing up, and had a headache all night. I was dizzy and nauseous and we had to get in the truck and drive for four hours in really horrible terrain. Between my shoulder, the altitude sickness, and I went into the race with a pre-existing injury... So, it was rough for me. RNO: It looked like you were suffering. What was your pre-existing injury? Drew: I had a back and neck injury – an on-the-job injury. RNO: Did any other teams suffer from the altitude sickness? Drew: Not as bad as I did. Some of them had it, but not as bad as I did. RNO: So, how far did you end up behind David & Mary at the Pit Stop? Drew: It was Charla and Mirna I think, and it was about five minutes, I think. RNO: Did you expect the other teams to get a penalty for speeding? Or did you realize your mistake before that? Drew: That's what happened. That's why we stayed at forty miles per hour. And then we fully expected to be last, but we fully expected the other teams to incur a penalty. RNO: So, did the producers explain to you about the speed limit? Drew: Yeah. It took a few hours to straighten it out at the Pit Stop, but we straightened it out and we were last. RNO: In your pre-race video you said that you didn't prepare at all for the race. Do you regret that? Kevin: No. Listen, we did the same thing in the first one and look how far it got us. No reason for us to think it wouldn't work this time around. Drew: There's nothing you can do. How do you prepare for altitude sickness? What, do you go up in an airplane and open the window. What do you do? RNO: True. So, how long do you think it took teams to solve the puzzle at the copper mine company? Drew: A long time. It took Kevin about – almost an hour. I know it took Joyce a real long time. It took her almost two hours, maybe more. It was a difficult one. And it was three in the morning too! RNO: So, after the Detour you were heading toward the Pit Stop and got stuck in the mud. Kevin you helped pull the car out and then Drew almost drove away with you. What happened? Kevin: Drew almost killed me, but... Drew: He didn't pull! I rocked the car like you do to get out of snow and I got the truck out. Kevin: Oh yeah, he got it out! That's why we all had to get out of the car – because he could rock it out! Drew: We got out of the mud because when he got out there was 300 less pounds in the truck! Kevin: So, right. Drew's going to keep telling that story. The fact is I'm heading over to ESPN right after this for the World's Strongest Man competition. Drew: Pull a few more trucks. Kevin: Hey, it's my event! RNO: So, what was your favorite moment from All-Stars? Drew: Getting eliminated! (laughs) No... I don't know. The terrain and the scenery was beautiful. They called it the Valley of the Moon and it really looked like I would imagine the moon. It was crazy, real wild-looking scenery. Kevin: That was pretty much the coolest thing we saw, because there really wasn't much else to look at. The first two legs we had in the first season – Victoria Falls, Namibia, Paris. Ecuador – not that there's anything wrong with Ecuador – but where they took us wasn't... there wasn't too much . Drew: Yeah. RNO: If you guys were asked, would you do another Amazing Race? Drew: Yeaaahhh, probably. Kevin: But after this performance, I don't think we have to worry about being asked. Drew: Yeah, I don't think they would let me do one. Kevin: But, yeah, I would do it. I'd do it with my wife – that would be a lot of fun. Drew: With our wives it would be great. Kevin: But I couldn't yell at her the way I yell at Drew. RNO: No. Especially after she has triplets! So, what teams are you rooting for on the race? Kevin: We hope for Teri & Ian. We've gotten to know them and Ian's a nut and Teri's a real sweet lady. Danny & Oswald, we're friendly with them, so we hope that they go far also. But it's anyone's race. Rob & Amber, two in a row, that's tough to argue with. They haven't stopped anything. RNO: Were the other teams worried about Rob & Amber? Was there talk about them on the race? Kevin: There was a lot of talk about those guys. It got tiring after awhile. Everyone was running around asking where Rob & Amber were and what they were doing. I was like, “Ah! Come on guys.” Worry about what you're doing. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing. RNO: Were there any teams you wished were on the race, but weren't? Kevin: We would have loved to have Nancy & Emily with us. I still think that Rob & Brennan were the best team ever. So, I would have liked to race with them. I think Ken & Gerard were great. Drew: Yeah. Kevin: They would a lot of fun. The Clowns would have been a lot of fun. There's a lot of teams out there. Some of the teams later on, in later seasons... Drew: I think Kris & Jon should have been on. Kevin: Yeah, Kris & Jon should have been. But some of the teams in nine and there wasn't much compelling. They found all the interesting teams that want to do this. When it's all models, and actresses… It's a waste. They're just looking for yo-yos who want to be on TV for a living. The fact that a girl's got fake boobs and a guy does a hundred crunches a day makes them interesting to watch? I don't think so. RNO: I see your point. Do you talk to other teams from your season? Kevin: I talk to Brennan regularly. Nancy & Emily... we talk to some of the other teams. Drew: Dave & Margareta... Kevin: We talk to Alex from Chris & Alex all the time. Yeah, we talk quite a bit. RNO: You were on the first Amazing Race, and All-Stars, and you also made a cameo on the Family Edition and you had your own little travel series, as well. Do you have any other TV plans in the works? Drew: Kevin doesn't. Kevin is going to be very preoccupied with the triplets. I didn't think I'd be doing anything else on TV, but I auditioned for a spot on a Court TV network judge show. So, I'm hoping to get that. RNO: Good luck! Drew: Thank you. RNO: What's next for you guys? I think triplets may be in one of your answers... Kevin: That will be next for me, no question. When it comes right down to it, Drew's still working in the court, I'm still working in accounting. We're doing the same things we were doing before we left for the first one. So, I don't think anything's going to change that much. RNO: Anything else you'd like to tell us about your time on The Amazing Race? Kevin: It was great to be given the opportunity to do it again. It was very flattering that everybody was rooting for us. Just the way it goes. RNO: Thank you guys! You provided a lot of entertainment for us! Kevin: Thanks, we appreciate that. Drew: Thanks!

This article really made me sad. It's like having friends you'll never see again. I can go back and watch reruns or look at pictures...but I'll never hear a new joke, or hear a new laugh, or find out what's up. I really have liked these guys since I first saw them. Man...I am gonna miss them.
